IT’S Family Learning Fortnight – so why not round up the kids and have some fun? That’s the message from borough chiefs after holding a series of taster sessions in Basingstoke.

Family Learning Fortnight, which started last Saturday and continues until October 30, allows parents and their children to get together and take part in healthy and informative activities such as reading, cooking and arts and crafts.

To mark the occasion, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council held an event at Basingstoke Discovery Centre, in Festival Place, showing residents the type of courses and activities on offer in the area.

It is hoped borough families will now take part in more activities together as a result.

Councillor Clive Sanders, Cabinet member for communities, sport and leisure, said: “Family Learning Fortnight promotes the benefit of parents getting involved in their children’s learning and encourages them to learn together as a family.

“The free taster sessions have given people the opportunity to see what is on offer and hopefully assist them in how to get involved and develop their learning experiences at home.”

The event, attended by dozens of residents, was supported by Basingstoke Voluntary Services, Hampshire Learning and schools around the community.
