BRITISH fruits were the apple of visitors’ eyes as they were celebrated at an annual event held in the grounds of an historic house.

Visitors to The Vyne, in Sherborne St John, were able to wander around the Kitchen Garden, which produced a bumper crop of fruit this autumn due to the hot weather during the spring.

Those attending the Orchard Festival were able to try a variety of apples, including a crop from apple trees planted six years ago by volunteers.

Vintage tractors were also on display and an ale and cider tent offered refreshments from a host of locally produced beers, while children could enjoy apple related games.

A pigeon laser shoot took place on the lawn, in recognition of The Vyne’s country sports’ past when the shooting season played a vital role in the property’s calendar, providing the estate with a good social standing and plenty of food for the winter months ahead.

Jules Fuller, The Vyne’s visitor experience manager, said: “People have really embraced the idea of celebrating such a beloved aspect of the traditional English landscape. They want to learn more about the important role that these orchards play in the countryside, as well as championing their cause.”

Visitors were also able to find out more about The Vyne’s new hives and resident honey bees.
