A RETIRING police inspector had bowed out of the service after almost 30 years and helped a charity close to his heart at the same time.

After pounding the streets of Southampton as a constable in Bitterne before rising to the rank of inspector in Shirley, Howard Povey called time on a career that has spanned 28 years.

To mark his departure, Insp Povey decided that instead of paying for a leaving party he would instead donate the money to the Wessex Cancer Trust.

At Shirley police station the cheque for £500 was handed to Jane Carley, pictured, from the charity that Insp Povey's wife Jill raised money for as she battled cancer for 13 years before finally succumbing to it in 1996.

Insp Povey said: "My wife raised a lot of money for the charity in the long time that she fought cancer. She was a great supporter of it and I thought it would be a way of giving something back."
