TO CELEBRATE the start of the Chinese Year of the Dragon, young children in Basingstoke took part in a community craft event.
The event, organised by Sovereign Kingfisher, was held at Sovereign’s Community House, in Branton Close, South Ham.
The children, all aged under 10, tried their hands at making dragon masks, Chinese drums, and other craft activities based on the idea of Chinese New Year.
Three students from Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College, in Basingstoke, helped with the event by spraying a graffiti wall in the garden with a New Year greeting in Chinese.
Younger children were treated to refreshments and took part in a ‘dragon dance’ inside the centre with the help of a ‘dragon’, which was on loan from Kempshott Junior School, in Old Down Close, Kempshott.
The Chinese Year of the Dragon, which has been celebrated across the world, is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac.
The next craft event at the Community House will take place on Friday, March 9 when youngsters will be invited to make gifts for Mothers’ Day.
