FRIDAY night’s low temperatures plumbed new depths according to local weather forecaster Trevor Wheeler.
The minus 13.3 degrees Celsius (8F) he recorded at Hurstbourne Tarrant was the lowest temperature witnessed during a February night since records there started in 1966.
Mr Wheeler, said: “I have the records from Faccombe Manor, which is about three miles from here, and you have to go back to 1954 to find anything as cold in February.
“One of the problems at these very low temperatures is that the salt spread on the roads loses effectiveness at below minus five as it stays as crystal form.”
The average temperature over the past two weeks has been around eight degrees Celsius below what we would normally expect at this time of year.
The lowest temperature recorded by Trevor since 1966 is minus 17 degrees Celsius which was during a January night in the early 1980s.
