Volunteers sponsored by Andover Rotary Club

AN Andover club has sponsored volunteers to work in developing countries across the world.

The Rotary Club of Andover is part of a scheme by the Voluntary Service Overseas organisation, where it raises money to help a volunteer take their professional expertise to remote communities for two years.

And so far the Andover Rotarians have sponsored an educationalist who has helped train teachers in Cambodia, an ophthalmologist who carried out eye treatments and taught eye testing techniques to selected locals in Guyana, and a teacher who set up a social services system in The Gambia. Each time the club has provided a grant or equipment to assist the volunteers in their work.

The group is currently sponsoring physiotherapist Sue Tincknell, from Reading, who is serving in eastern India in the coastal town of Puri. With a grant from the club she has set up a physiotherapy clinic and training centre.
