SHOPPERS in Andover town centre were treated to the unusual sight of people mountaineering in the High Street recently.

A climbing wall had been erected to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support which was organised by Carnival committee member and businessman Mark Lazenby.

The event saw £227.50 raised and paid into a Jordan Trek fund which will see him undertake a sevenday trek across the desert in Jordan to raise money for the charity.

Mark says that this will be the most challenging event in his life so far, but he is doing it as a way to say thank you after his mother was given the all clear after treatment following a diagnosis of cancer in October last year.

Mark said: “Thanks must go to James and the team from Valley Leisure for their support in bringing the wall into the High Street and giving their time to support the event.

“Thanks also to the 3 Amigos Charity Productions for staging and collecting of monies and finally to everyone who had a go and helped raise the cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.”

Mark’s next fundraising event takes place in October when Grape Expectations will be holding a wine tasting evening.
