A30 near Basingstoke will close for several nights
4:01pm Monday 3rd September 2012 in News
A MAJOR road into Basingstoke is to be closed for several nights for resurfacing from next week.
Hampshire County Council has announced it will close the A30 near Old Basing from the junction with Byfleet Avenue to the junction with Greywell Road.
The closures will be between the hours of 7pm and 6am and will start next Tuesday night September 11 and continue to Friday night. There will be no closures at the weekend, but the road will be closed again on the nights of September 17, 18 and 19. A fully-signed diversion route will be in place and efforts will be made to allow vehicles to reach properties while the work is being carried out.
The dates are subject to revision, but motorists are advised to look out for the yellow boards at the roadside where updates will be posted.
Before the resurfacing begins, some preliminary kerb and ironwork replacement will take place, requiring temporary traffic lights.
Councillor Mel Kendal , Hampshire County Council executive member for environment and transport, said: “This work on a major road is essential to extend its life and make it more resilient for the future. Operation Resilience is a planned £17 million programme of work on Hampshire’s roads over the next year and marks a significant shift away from reactive to planned maintenance.
“We have taken a great deal of care to ensure that residents and business in the area have been kept fully informed about the works, as this is a busy road with a high volume of traffic.
“The work is being done at night to reduce the impact on road users, residents and businesses, and to avoid having to divert traffic into already crowded alternative routes such as the A33. We have also tried to lessen the impact on local businesses by stopping work at weekends.”
