Firewalk challenge for Basingstoke family

A BASINGSTOKE charity is looking for fundraisers with nerves of steel to walk across burning coals for a good cause.
Anna’s Challenges is looking for 50 people to walk over 600 degrees Celsius coals to raise money for the charity, set up by Rachel Marke to fund equipment for her four-year-old daughter Anna, who has cystic fibrosis (CF), and other local sufferers.
The condition is one of the UK’s most commonly inherited life-threatening diseases, and sufferers have a tough daily regime, including medication and physiotherapy.
Rachel and her husband Paul, 39, will be holding the firewalk at Basingstoke Rugby Football Club on Saturday, February 23, 2013, and they hope people will sign up to hot foot it for the charity.
Rachel, 34, said: “This is the first fundraising event that we’ve organised and we’re very excited. Hopefully, a lot of people will join in.
“It’s a great opportunity to do something different and daring. The money raised will go a long way to helping children with CF and their families in the local area.”
The goal is to raise £5,000 through the fire walk. The event will be led by Scott Bell, twice Guinness World Record holder for the longest fire walk, and participants will receive an hour of training before crossing the burning coals at about 6pm.
After the challenge, there will be food, drink and a raffle in aid of Anna’s Challenges at the rugby club. Registration costs £35 and participants are asked to pledge to raise a minimum of £100 in aid of Anna’s Challenges.
All walkers will receive a photograph of themselves walking the walk, plus a certificate of achievement.
