Curfew delayed for wedding day

A JUDGE sentencing a teenager to a curfew order delayed it for a day to allow the youth to attend his aunt’s wedding reception.

Jack Whiting appeared at Winchester Crown Court after breaching a community sentence.

The 19-year-old, who lives with his girlfriend and her mother, in Corfe Walk, Winklebury, Basingstoke, was given a 12-month community order in November 2011, to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work after he was found in possession of cannabis.

But he breached the sentence on June 30 and July 26 this year when failing to turn up for the unpaid work. Prosecutor Ceri Harrison said Whiting had completed 44.5 hours when he breached the order.

She said he claimed he did not turn up for work because he had employment elsewhere, but she said there was no evidence to prove this.

Defending Whiting, Nicholas Rowland said his client had secured work experience at a garage in Basingstoke. He added: “He was working but not getting paid for it with the view of getting a paid job in the long run.”

Judge Keith Cutler sentenced Whiting to a four-week curfew from 10pm to 6am, starting on August 25 – a day after the teenager appeared in court, to allow him to go to the reception that evening.

He said: “You still have 50 or so hours to go on your order which you will have to complete, so please get it done and put it behind you.”
