A FIRE in a Hampshire barn could stay burning for a week according to firefighters.

Hampshire Fire & Rescue were called to the barn in Alresford Drove, South Wonston , at around 10pm on Friday.

Two appliances from Winchester and one from Sutton Scotney attended and used foam to protect the roof of a nearby thatched cottage.

Firefighter Andy Tait said: “The fire could be burning for a week because there was a substantial amount of hay in the barn; tonnes of it. There’s no point trying to pull the hay out so it’s better to burn it off and we had to make sure we protected the buildings around the fire.”

Watch manager Steve May added: “We have it on a ‘watching brief’ which means we will maintain our presence there to make sure the fire is contained and no embers are blown around. We will be out there until it is safe again and we can hand over control to a responsible party.”

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
