Bad weather warning

MOTORISTS are being advised to take extra care when driving to work this morning because of bad weather.

Hampshire police has issued a warning after the Met Office predicted heavy rain and strong wind during rush hour.

There has already been 28mm of rain today, and another 10 to 15mm is expected to fall during the rest of the morning, with some areas of the county at risk of flooding.

Alan Smith, from Hampshire police press office, said: “Surface water is likely to affect driving conditions.”

He advised motorists to allow extra time for journeys, to drive with the lights on and to leave additional space between them and the vehicle in front.

Typical narrow focus unfortunately. It is not good that our police (and press) who want and promote safer roads ignore the most vulnerable on them: people walking or using a bicycle.

Good time to remind the (dry) people in their cars that driving through a puddle and splashing a person who is walking or riding a bicycle is liable to find themselves in trouble with the law (Highway code 144, 146).

And a reminder to those on bicycles: gently apply your brakes to keep them dry so you can stop when needed (as I had to when a person in a car cut in front of me this morning - idiot).

p.s. also good to make sure your water proofs are actually water-proof instead of just wind-proof (more of a note to myself). At least the rain was tasty and warm this morning (a sensation those in cars miss!)
