CHARITABLE residents in and around Basingstoke are being encouraged to brew up and have a cuppa to help the fight against cancer.
Macmillan Cancer Support is once again holding the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, a nationwide charity event in which organisations and individuals have fun and raise funds for the charity.
Last year, more than £10million was raised nationwide – about £250,000 of which was raised in Hampshire – and organisers are hoping this year’s event, which mainly takes place on Friday, will be just as successful.
Katie Blake, Macmillan fundraising manager for Hampshire, said a record number of people have already signed up to put the kettle on in Hampshire, with around 2,500 registrations.
She said: “We have had a fantastic response from people who are keen to get involved in raising money for Macmillan.
“There are a lot of options for people who are thinking about holding, or going along to, an event. The events do not have to take place on Friday, and it doesn’t matter if people don’t like coffee and would rather have cocktails or herbal tea.
“All that matters is that people take part and help Macmillan make this year’s coffee morning the best ever.”
Businesses, churches and schools are all set to take part this year, with Barclays, A-Plan Insurance, and Marks & Spencer among the local companies already signed up in Basingstoke.
The first national World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was held in 1991, when 2,600 people registered to hold coffee mornings across the country. Since then, the event has raised over £60m in total for Macmillan Cancer Support.
All money raised through the event will go to Macmillan to help pay for specialist nurses and doctors, and grants and advice for people who have money problems because of their illness.
The money will also help to keep information and support centres stocked with all the resources they need to support people affected by cancer.
