DEDICATED hospital staff and volunteers who go above and beyond have been honoured for their exceptional work.
A total of 201 people working with Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were nominated for a WOW! Award between April and July 2012 by their colleagues and patients.
The 35 winners, who were chosen from the nominees by the trust’s council of governors, were honoured at a celebratory lunch at The Ark Conference Centre, at Basingstoke hospital .
Nominations were made in categories including patient safety, customer care, above and beyond, innovation and environmental, and sustainability and productivity. Marilyn Richter, a volunteer in the isolation ward, was nominated by staff from the ward in the “above and beyond category” for her unswerving dedication and her caring attitude.
Nominators Natalie Mounter and Rebecca May said she “goes way beyond what is expected of a volunteer”.
Mrs Richter, 45, from Rooksdown, said she had been volunteering for a year at the hospital, doing up to 20 hours a week, and said she was delighted to have been given such fantastic recognition.
She said: “My job is just to make the staff nurses’ lives easier. Whatever they need doing, I try to help with.”
Physiotherapist Adele Brailey was nominated in the innovation category by patient Mrs Margaret Morley, who received acupuncture from Ms Brailey after going to her with “unbearable” pain in her back and leg.
Mrs Morley said in her nomination: “I am so pleased Adele suggested acupuncture and was able to start straight away as an alternative to physio and thanks go to her for her care and encouragement.” Ms Brailey, 28, said: “Acupuncture is becoming more widely used and it is just one of the ways we can help people who are in pain. It is lovely to hear from patients that they think we are doing a good job.”
Foundation trust chairman Liz Padmore told the winners: “It just goes to show what a fantastic job you all do.”
Since the creation of the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which covers Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover hospitals, the number of public and staff nominations received for the awards has risen from between 20 and 30 each month for Basingstoke hospital to between 40 and 50 across HHFT.
