Sainsbury's to redevelop Basingstoke distribution depot

SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury’s has announced that it will start redeveloping its distribution depot in Basingstoke from next month.
The first phase of works will involve providing a new building for chilled storage on adjacent land at Houndmills which was purchased from former fork-lift truck-maker Linde. It is anticipated that this first phase of works will be completed by August 2013 and the new chilled storage building will be operating in time for Christmas 2013.
During these works, no changes are planned to the existing depot buildings or operations. The depot, which has been operating in Basingstoke for nearly 50 years and employs 750 staff, will be redeveloped to provide a purpose-built logistics centre.
The company says its multi-million pound investment in Basingstoke should help to secure the long-term future of Sainsbury ’s at Houndmills. The whole scheme will be completed in phases to ensure minimal disruption to operations.
Paul Green, Sainsbury’s Logistics town planner, said “We are very excited that the first stage to redevelop our existing depot is commencing in October. “The proposals will vastly improve the efficiency of Sainsbury’s distribution operations in the South East, and will importantly ensure our long-term future in Basingstoke. “
