AN elderly Hampshire woman who died after falling down the stairs at her home refused to use her stairlift, an inquest heard.

Valerie Masser, 85, fractured her spine in the fall in May at her house in Old Palace Farm, King’s Somborne.

She was taken to Southampton General Hospital but succumbed to her injuries a day after the fall on May 27.

Her son Andrew, who lived with her and found her after the fall, said she had a stairlift but would not use it.

The inquest heard last Wednesday that she had several medical problems including arthritis, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and breathing difficulties that required extra oxygen.

Coroner for Central Hampshire, Grahame Short, said it was likely a dizzy spell caused Mrs Masser’s fall and recorded a verdict of accidental death.
