Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner candidates gear up for live debate

Vice-chancellor Prof Joy Carter is delighted the debate will be hosted by Winchester University
THE University of Winchester is taking centre stage in one of Hampshire’s biggest political battles of the year.
It hosts a live debate for candidates in the race to be Hampshire’s first Police and Crime Commissioner next month.
The public will get to hear from the Conservative’s Michael Mates, Labour’s Jacqui Rayment, the Lib Dem’s David Goodall and Independent candidate Simon Hayes on key issues like CCTV, graffiti and drug-dealing.
The debate will be chaired by BBC South political correspondent Alex Forsyth.
It has been organised by a final year BA Journalism student, Louis O’Brien, as part of his work with university journalism program Winchester News Online (WINOL), with help from Dr William Sheward, university program leader for politics and global studies.
Louis, of Southampton, said: “This Live Debate will be one of the first of its kind. It seems fitting that it should be held here at the University in the very heart of Hampshire, right next to the Police Headquarters.”
Vice-Chancellor Professor Joy Carter added: “We’re delighted to be hosting such a high profile public debate here at Winchester. The forum will allow Hampshire residents to make a better informed choice on Election Day.”
Elections take place on November 15 with the commissioner beginning duties on November 22.
