Winchester students a big success at journalism awards

TRAINEE journalists at the University of Winchester have had record-breaking success.
Students won two prizes at the Broadcast Journalism Training Council Awards last week and were runner-up in two more.
Andrew Giddings won ‘Best TV News Report’ for a piece on lead theft from a church roof and Domonique Jenkins and Cara Laithwaite, producer and presenter respectively, won ‘Best TV Newsday’ for special bulletin UK Today.
Gareth Messenger was runner up in the news report category while Colin Boag finished second in ‘Best Radio News Report’.
Chris Horrie, program leader for the course, said: “The awards were a huge success. Once more, they underline Winchester’s emergence as a leading centre for modern journalism education, both around London as well as the south. This is the fourth time in the last five years that our students have been recognised for their excellence in these national awards.”
Winchester won more awards and runner-up prizes than it ever had before and beat all of the 30+ other universities at the ceremony.
The awards were hosted by Winchester University and presented by ITV newsreader Alastair Stewart.
Mr Stewart said: “I am thrilled to be here and really impressed. These are men or women who actually want to go into the business. They have got to be good, they have got to know what the values are, they’ve got to have morality, impartiality and good judgement - they have got to have the lot.”
