Walking Bus scheme started at St Mary Bourne Primary School
A WALKING Bus has been set up at a primary school.
Children at St Mary Bourne Primary School wore high-visibility jackets, provided by Basingstoke-based Snows Kia, on their journey to school to mark International Walk to School month.
The Walking Bus scheme works by an adult ‘driver’ picking up children en route to school and leading the group, while a ‘conductor’ takes position at the rear of the bus to ensure everyone reaches school safely.
Jonathan Nelson, headteacher at St Mary Bourne Primary, said the bus is a “great way to get the children active in the mornings.”
He added: “Walking to school makes sure they’re alert and ready for the day, and it also teaches them about road safety as well as the benefits of not using cars all the time. On average, there are over 30 children walking to school every day as part of the scheme.”
