Sir George - back in the Cabinet after just six weeks on the back benches
10:09am Saturday 20th October 2012 in News
AFTER a retirement from front-line politics of just six weeks, Andover's MP Sir George Young is back on the front bench of Government as a member of the cabinet.
Sir George has been called up to replace Andrew Mitchell who resigned after weeks of bad publicity in the spotlight following his alleged outburst with police about riding a bicycle through the gates of Downing Street.
Sir George is now Chief Whip, trying to ensure that Conservative MPs tow the line as much as possible and support party policy.
It is the second time that Sir George has replaced a member of the Mitchell family.
Andrew Mitchell's father, Sir David Mitchell, was Andover's MP between 1964 and 1997 when Sir George was adopted to replace him on Sir David's retirement.
In another coincidence both David Mitchell are keen cyclists - with Sir George a former chairman of the all-party cycling group and once known as the 'bicycling baronet'..

I don't as what planet you are on but Mr Young should give up as an MP as he does nothing for the people of Andover full stop!!!! If he did he stop the council from the perscution of those who are unemployed & disabled / terminally ill who are going to lose their homes due The Govt'ments new Welfare reforms which are aimed at only those who are on only benefits those in work are safe? and when Universal credit comes in you will to be online to pay your rents. So like i have said Mr Young has done nothing to help??? and as Andover is almost a ghost town well next year the streets will be full of homeless people?

George Young has done absolutely NOTHING for Andover nor it's people.
I spluttered in disbelief at Manuela Wahnon's 'Have your Say' comment saying what a shining example George Young is. I have never read such utter tripe in all my time.
For sure he has cropped up at a couple at local events, but that was only for his own self promotion and with the interests of the Conservative party mind.
How does that help the people of Andover? It doesn't.
It's time we had elected representation who actually care for this area.

After earlier briefing that the new Chief Whip would not be announced until tomorrow, Downing Street has just named Sir George Young as Andrew Mitchell's replacement. Since Young left the cabinet in last month's reshuffle (he had served as Leader of the House since 2010), one advantage of his appointment is that Cameron will be not be required to make any further ministerial changes.
Nicknamed the "Bicycling Baronet" for his love of cycling, one hopes that Young, an Old Etonian, treats "the plebs" with more respect than his predecessor. He would be advised not to repeat his infamous quip that "the homeless are what you step over when you come out of the opera."
Incidentally, just to add to the sense that there is some divine curse on this government, Young, along with his children, once appeared with Jimmy Savile on a British Rail poster promoting the transport of bicycles by rail. The promo below still features on his website.

Sir George back in a seat of power able to effect change? and keep flying the flag for Andover? What’s not to like?
I only have and one hope and dream, that Sir George makes into Cabinet as Deputy to the Prime Minister ? why? because with his wise head he can affect policy and be able guide us through these troublesome times.
