WITH wintry weather gripping the county, children at Roman Way Primary School have been invited to name Hampshire’s gritter trucks to help raise their awareness of winter road safety.

The school is near one of Amey’s depots, from which it delivers local road services including gritting and snow ploughing during the winter in partnership with Hampshire County Council.

A yellow gritter visited the school on Monday morning for the children to ask questions about before colouring in a picture of one and suggesting a name.

Four winning names were being announced yesterday.

David Ogden, Amey’s account director in Hampshire, said: “Road safety is a big issue year round, but icy conditions can make the school run hazardous.

“Having a look at a gritter and thinking up names for it should be fun for the children, but we hope it will also engage them and their families with staying safe on the roads this winter.”
