Oliver, 12, steps out for charity

AMPORT youngster Oliver Hoare took on a man-sized challenge when he walked the Fan Dance to raise money for Cancer Research on Saturday.

The Fan Dance is part of the Fitness and Navigation phase of the selection course for the Special Air Service and Special Boat Service. It is a 26km walk in the Brecon Beacons in Wales and involves climbing Pen Y Fan twice, which is the highest peak on the Beacons. Oliver did not carry a 50lb Bergen, but he did brave howling winds and rain to complete this arduous challenge. Oliver, aged 12, undertook this challenge because cancer has invaded his life in a big way in the last year – his grandmother died one year ago from cancer, two close family friends have suffered from cancer and thankfully survived, and one of his teachers at school has recently been undergoing chemotherapy. He said: “Cancer is horrible and it seems that nearly everyone I know has a friend or relative who has suffered from it. I wanted to do something to help combat this nasty illness.”
