A FILM director from Hampshire is hoping that his debut piece will impress the top movie promoters.
Sons of Cuba, by Andrew Lang, featured amongst several upcoming projects at the London UK Film Focus.
The event, which was held between Monday, June 29 and Thursday, July 2, brought more than 100 distributors to see Britain’s most promising film talent.
Mr Lang, 28, who comes from Sparsholt near Winchester, has spent several years working and studying in Latin America.
Making his directing debut in the region, he has filmed a documentary about boxing in Cuba, which has taken four years to reach the silver screen.
His film focuses on the national academy where children as young as nine are groomed as potential Olympic champions.
Mr Lang chronicles their intensive training along with junior contests to sort the world-beaters from the also-rans.
Screen South, the regional media group, provided a grant for the film and backed its showing at the London festival.
Mr Lang said: “It is a huge honour to be selected for London UK Film Focus and after four years of hard work, I can’t quite believe that my first feature film will be shown to the biggest players in the industry.
“The peer group of British films that Sons of Cuba has been showcased with is second to none.”
The other films at the event included the premiere of writer and director Julian Fellowes’ new project, Time to Time.
Francine Heyward, who produced Sons of Cuba, said: “We’re hoping that on the back of the London festival that we’ll be able to find a distributor for the UK.”
The movie is also being shown at the New York Latino Film Festival later this summer, she added.
