Search for Winchester spaceman in full flight

1:40pm Tuesday 28th July 2009

The Intech science centre at Morn Hill, Winchester, is continuing its search for a ‘spaceman’.

The venue has bought a replica of the Apollo 11 space suits worn by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during the July 1969 lunar landing.

It is looking for somebody to wear the outfit to become the venue’s ‘greeter’ and pose for pictures with visitors.

Several applications have already been received, and to gain an insight of what is involved, Chronicle reporter Warwick Payne took the suit for a test run.

He spent some of last Friday (July 24) greeting visitors to the popular attraction, and passing himself off as one of NASA’s finest.

He said: “The outfit is a child magnet – several of them ran over to have their picture taken with me. Quite a few asked if I’d been to the Moon and where I’d parked my spaceship.

“Despite being a replica the suit is very realistic, because it is heavy, hot, and takes several weeks to put on.

“Still, at least the astronomy GCSE I took at evening classes has finally been useful. It was a fun afternoon.”

Anyone interested in becoming the Winchester spaceman on a more permanent basis can call Andy Lane at the venue on 01962 891915 or e-mail andylane@intech-uk.com.
