MORE than 1,600 Winchester homes were without power for seven hours on Sunday evening (August 9).
Southern Electric confirmed two power cables came down in a field off Andover Road shortly after 6pm, cutting off electricity to 1,696 properties in Winchester and Chilcomb.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue confirmed the live 11,000-volt power cables caused a blaze in a straw field but that it was put out within half an hour.
A spokesman for Southern Electric said power was restored to homes by 1am the following morning.
He added: “It’s unclear what caused the power cables to come down but our priority is to get the power back on and then investigate the reasons why later.”
Appliances from Winchester and Alresford attended the fire, which was put out by 6.45pm.
