A POPULAR agricultural extravaganza is looking to boost its numbers by letting children in for free.

It is the first time in 101 years the Alresford Show has allowed youngsters in for nothing as it looks to bounce back from last September's disaster.

The show was cancelled at the 11th hour after torrential rain on the eve of the event made Tichborne Park dangerously impassable.

"We're looking forward to coming back with a bang on September 5th - a fresh start for our new century," said Gussie Raimes, secretary of the Alresford Show.

As well as livestock parades there will be a show by the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas, a bird of prey flying display and showjumping. There will also be vintage machinery, ferrets, a horticultural show and more than 220 trade and craft stands.

Organisers have also opened up the site by removing the fence that runs along the tree-lined exit route, allowing the show to spread further afield.
