THE latest member of OAP rockers The Zimmers is looking for a boost from his fellow residents.
Totton grandfather John Langridge is urging people to get behind the band’s first album following poor sales in the UK.
He said that unless more people buy Lust for Life it could be the end for the ageing musicians.John has just returned from Germany where more than 150 journalists descended on Berlin for the album launch.
John, 65, said: “It’s tough for albums like this because they are produced on a shoestring budget.
If we really want to get any albums sold we have to pay for the publicity on TV which is too expensive for us.
“It would be great if local radio stations started playing our songs but I’m beginning to think this country is ageist. Over in Germany we were treated like stars. We had a chauffeur-driven limousine and we drew large crowds wherever we went.
“But if the album doesn’t sell here then The Zimmers will fail.
Which is a shame because we are the voice of pensioners.”
The Zimmers began as a BBC TV documentary giving a voice to the elderly. They shot to fame in May 2007 with their cover of The Who’s My Generation.
John sings three songs on the album; Let it Be, Tears in Heaven and We Will Rock You.
■ The Zimmers will perform at Age Concern’s annual conference at 1.55pm today in the Great Hall, Winchester.
