Southampton's fluroide plan gets backing from health bosses

HAMPSHIRE health chiefs have backed plans to fluoridate the water supplies of some of its residents in a bid to improve dental health in Southampton.

The county's primary care trust board has agreed to support the controversial initiative, which would see 36,000 people in Eastleigh, Totton and Netley receive fluoridated water.

Southampton City PCT has proposed the scheme for two-thirds of city residents in a bid to improve a poor record on tooth decay in five-year-olds.

Campaigners opposed to the scheme argue it is not proven to work, and carries the risk of side effects including mottled teeth, cancers and brittle bones.

Hampshire PCT board members accepted the public health benefits of the scheme, but want the body overseeing the ongoing public consultation to ensure the views of non-city residents are taken into account.

They will now be sending a formal response to South Central Strategic Health Authority, which will be making a final decision on fluoridation in February.

'Now in the North, Bolton' is on the button about the origin of the fluoride to be added to drinking water to benefit 'absolutely everybody', according to England's top dentist. It is a sorry reflection on the level to which dental health has sunk in England when it is seriously proposed to use drinking water to dispose of fluosilicic acid, a form of waste that is classified as 'hazardous waste' under the EU Waste Directive(91/EU689/E
C). Is it any wonder that fluoridation of drinking water has long been wholly discredited in the rest of the EU.

Do we know what Southern Water's opinion is on the subject? If all those who oppose refuse to to pay their water bills perhaps the water companies will take note.

If we care then perhaps there will be something we can put through a filter - can anyone suggest a possible antedote?

As far as I know the only way to remove floride from drinking water is by reverse osmosis, you can have a filter fitted in your home for drinking water, but they are quite pricy.

What an infringement of our rights! I don't want excess flouride in my body! It might seem harsh but I don't want even potential risk to myself just because other people can't be bothered to brush their children's teeth! It's their personal choice. My children never needed a filling and it wasn't due to fortunate inheritance just responsible parenting. Own brand flouride toothpaste is cheap. Parents make their choice, why rob me of mine? And if the authorities think it's a cost effective way of tackling a health problem what if it's later found to be responsible for bone damage. How much NHS money will be paid out in claims?

"Hampshire health chiefs back fluoride plan"

They always have, ever since the gov. announced their policy on it.

The fact remains that the vast majority of people who have commented via the Echo site are against the idea, on ethical and health grounds.

Non-payment of water bills will have little effect on the council/health authority and most of us believe in paying bills, although I know some people who haven't paid a water bill since privatisation, in protest against the selling off of our publicly owned water co.

I believe that if this barmy idea is implemented, it may well lead to direct action. Perhaps there could be some protection against mass medication under the EU Human Rights law. Does anyone know the legal situation regarding our rights to unadulterated tap water?

Bottled water would work out expensive and a great inconvenience.

because totton is on the list that means redbridge millbrook lordhill lordwood childwood aldermoor coxford shirley warren shirley sidford freematle hillyfeilds nursling and few more areas will have this chemical acid in our water we all get our water from the same pumping station has totton.(if your not sure if you are on the same water mains ask SWA they will tell you).
you could try to boil the water before drinking i belive fluosilicic acid has a lower vaporize point when mix with water but it some thing you have to check on.another way is to sink your own well in your garden if you got one.

Boiling your tap water will actually CONCENTRATE the fluoride.

The only cost effective way of removing flouride from tap water is a "reverse osmosis filter" (The cheapest I have seen was around £160 installed by a Company advertising on Southampton Gumtree website)

The equipment to inject flouride into our water supplies has ALREADY been installed at the water stations and was done earlier this year!

For fluoride filters simply Google for:

"southampton gumtree fluoride"

just a though Sheitma Pance if it gets concentrated when boiled then when you boil food then this is going to be concentrated into the food we going to eat.

So the so-called health chiefs are gonna forcibly feed the populace this poison, to bath & shower in!

They must be getting paid handsomely for this!!

I wonder if any terrorists reading this are planning to inject something extra? Do we have Police guarding our water supplies yet?

There was an item on Meridian's teletext news late last night (Thursday) and earlier today (Friday) about a New Forest MP and plans to fluoridate tap water. He was contacting the Health Minister about the one-sided argument being put forward by the local health authority.

This sounds promising, although the news item in no longer on-screen, probably to make space for later items. Perhaps it will get a mention on the 18:00 local ITV news (unless it's too controversial for them!).

Good thinking, southy. This one more aspect of this ill conceived plan.

A bad idea is a bad idea, no matter how it's dressed up by those who want to force their will upon us.
