Redknapp: Why I quit Portsmouth for Spurs

Former Saints boss Harry Redknapp has revealed why he quit rivals Portsmouth to join Tottenham Hotspur.

The move comes after Spurs, bottom of the Premier League, sacked coach Juande Ramos last night night.

The two clubs have agreed a compensation package of £5m.

Redknapp said: "It's a big opportunity to manage a big club before I retire.”

He added Spurs are four points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League after taking just two points from eight matches this season.

A Tottenham statement on Saturday read: "The club can announce that Damien Comolli, sporting director, Juande Ramos, head coach and first team coaches, Marcos Alvarez and Gus Poyet, have left the club, with immediate effect. We wish them well.

"Clive Allen, development squad coach, and Alex Inglethorpe, youth team manager, will take charge for Sunday's league match against Bolton.

"The club has requested permission to hold discussions with Harry Redknapp and Portsmouth FC has reluctantly agreed."

Redknapp said: "It's a great opportunity for me. It's a big club, Tottenham.

"I love Portsmouth and I loved my time there, we had some fantastic success and I'd never been happier.

"But it's a great deal for Portsmouth, £5million for me, and it's a chance for me to get on and see what I can do."

Redknapp expects to be at White Hart Lane for this afternoon's clash with Bolton and plans to address the players before the match.

And despite the despair likely to be felt by Pompey fans at his departure, the former West Ham boss insists it was best for all concerned.

"It's difficult, the funds are tight. We were talking about selling players in January," Redknapp said.

"Tottenham have come in and offered £5million, which is good for the club, and if we're all being honest it was a deal which is good for the club and a chance for me to manage a big club before I retire.

"It worked out okay for everybody."

The new Tottenham manager refused to rule out raiding his old club when the transfer window opens again on January 1.

He said: "I would not sit here and say never. It depends whether the club want to sell them.

"If they did it would be an open market and we would be in there like every other Premier League club would be for one or two of the players.

"But if they did not want to sell them, then we would not be rocking the boat.

"It would be Portsmouth's decision."

Portsmouth have expressed their disappointment at the departure of Redknapp.

In a statement on the club's website, Chief executive Peter Storrie said: "Harry is a great manager and we, of course, did not want him to leave. We tried everything we could to keep him at Portsmouth.

"However, he made it clear that although he has achieved great success here at Fratton Park, apparently Spurs is one of the only clubs he would consider leaving for.

"We have subsequently agreed a substantial compensation package with Spurs, although our overwhelming desire would have been to retain the manager."

Redknapp had two spells in charge at Pompey, either side of a stint with Saints.

Storrie added: "On his return to Fratton Park, Harry performed a near miracle in keeping us in the top flight and we have since gone on to become an established top-10 side.

"Last season we won the FA Cup for the first time in nearly 70 years and qualified for European competition for the first time.

"The last thing I wanted was to see Harry leave this club but the lure of Spurs proved too much for him to turn down."

Former Arsenal and England captain Tony Adams, Redknapp's assistant at Portsmouth, will take over for today's match with Fulham and is tipped to become the new manager.

Good isn't it. How fantastic would it be to play Spurs next season? Also the Skates now have an ex alcoholic and jail bird at the helm. Things can only get better.

When Harry left Saints to go back to Portsmiff he said "This is my last job in football, I wouldn't have gone anywhere else"... so much for loyalty. Any chance Jan and Rupert might take over at Nottarf Krap? Dream on eh? With their CV's they are unemployable elsewhere.

Rupert Lowe relegated Saints i think you will find.

We are also down and out before Redknapp turned up after the shambolic mess with Sturrock and Wigley.

Even Claus Lundekvam recently said that it was dead and buried months before the season finished.

As much as I like football, and quite honestly, I like to watch our local village games - a much more rewarding enjoyment to see the next village beaten. Ideally, I would like to see all the clubs reduce by half the big fee earners - thus making the gate money reduced to half - after all this is a downturn economy and it is one of the most sought-after enjoyment for a whole family - nothing like a game on Boxing day and coming home with a whacking great meal.

What a great idea, but we know it would never happen. We all live in the real world, players and managers live in the land where its all ching ching and nothing else. Loyalty? forget it. Nice to see Harry says he wants to manage a big club before he retires, what does that say for portsmouth? He has crapped on them big time, and showed the same ammount of loyalty as he did to us.

Anyone fancy going onto the Portsmouth News website and winding up the Portsmiff fans? I've made a start but could do with some support!

Redknapp is so full of bull!

Promised Portsmouth when he last went back to them that this would be his final club before retiring.

I believe he also said that at Southampton before sending them down.

The only thing Redknapp is interested in is ££££££££

I have to laugh at these buffoons who still like to blame absolutely everything on Rupert Lowe. They must think the positions of all clubs in all the leagues are down solely to their chairmen. I also have to laugh at the way these same fans would be so willing to see their club turned into the plaything of a rich foreign oligarch and yet still reserve their total hatred for Rupert Lowe because he is a "toff". I have to laugh even more when they stay away from games in thousands and then blame the chairman for reducing the club's wage bill accordingly to stave off bankruptcy. I don't think it has even occurred to some of the dumbos who write "now that Stern John has gone out on loan I'm not setting foot inside St Mary's" etc etc that it's because of people staying away that he's had to go out on loan in the first place. I split my sides when people say that "Rupert Lowe" is creaming off the clubs wealth, or that he is only playing a team of kids so he can showcase their talents for big money transfers - the twist of logic and sense necessary to come up with a view like that is beyond mere stupidity.
If the overpaid overprotected spoilt players play badly I blame them. if the mananger makes bad decisions I blame him. The chairman balances the books, that's all, so leave your class hatred at home, eh?

Its lack of intelligence. Its easy to scapegoat the Chairman especially if hes posh.
Thinking about the real reasons for our demise is far too complicated for most of them.
Boycotting is also an excuse for being a "fair-weather" supporter.

Spurs will go down, Arry boy will say they were doomed before he arrived, too many injuries etc...played too many games, small squad etc The London Press as usual will suck up to him with Levy taking the flack! Arry offski to buy Bournemouth, arriving there saying this is my club etc this is where it all started, the London press will again fawn over this poor excuse of a man!!!

'arry can only be as loyal as the next cheque is waved under his nose, other cheques are possible in the future and he will be off again. Fratton park will be big enough now that Pompey are on a downward spiral. Cannot see any local derbys next season on the south coast, ex-player-managers rarely succeed, and I do see Spurs staying up in premier next season, just. As Mottie would say 'funny old game.
