HAMPSHIRE is again getting ready to put its skates on as Winchester Cathedral opens its ice rink for the second year.
Olympic gold medallist Robin Cousins and Gulf War veteran Allen Parton helped celebrate the opening of the rink and the German-style market in Cathedral Close.
Mr Parton - the face of the 2007 Poppy Appeal - took to the ice with Mr Cousins to show the ease with which wheelchair-users can skate.
The rink exceeded expectations by attracting 35,000 skaters last year, and will run until January 6.
The market, boasting 80 chalet-type stalls, will operate until December 16.
Cathedral receiver-general Adrian Munns said the aim was to attract 40,000 people and make the rink an annual fixture.

A welcome development. Now it is time for Southampton City Council to take steps to ensure that a permanent [bold]ice rink[/bold] is built in the city.
Everyone knows such a development would be more beneficial than the endless stream of blocks of flats that is currently being built. Time for some action SCC!

for me I see no benefit most ice rinks I have seen become a haven for those limited social skills, I well remember the local thugs who were employed as the bouncers at the southampton rink my recent vists to Goport and Reading have shown me nothing has changed.
if you are so keen for an ice rink then find an investor

And please note that Winchester's rink isn't being run by the city council, but by the Cathedral. Any body could set one up if they are enthusiastic enough. Including you...

Sorry if i offend anybody but i cannot see anybody with half a brain stumping up millons for something they would not make a profit on.Ice sports fans are in the minority so unless some mad ice hockey millionaire come from were ever, its not going to happen. You cannot blame any council, why spend money on something that will not meet running costs.

But there is good news - the new Guildhall square redevelopment (well the new paving slabs) will include power points for market stalls and wait for it - a temporary ice rink. That's what it said on the planning material I viewed last Thursday. Can't wait.

How about setting up a "pretend" rink like the old "Peaches" in Southampton but minus the ice. It was a red-hot venue for teens and tearaways. Any ice lovers who turned up felt like middle-class misfits and didn't stay long.
