A GAY police officer in Basingstoke believes Hampshire Constabulary deserves its reputation as a considerate employer.

The force has just been declared among the most gay-friendly employers in the country by homosexual pressure group Stonewall.

And Pc Jess Lawlor, who is currently based in the town centre, can see why.

The 25-year-old joined Hampshire Constabulary two years ago, and has never made any secret of her sexuality.

She is now the Basingstoke Lesbian and Gay Liaison Officer (LAGLO) within Hampshire Constabulary and is hoping to forge links between the police and the gay community.

She said: "Being gay myself I can help to break down any barriers and perceptions people may have of the police when it comes to homophobic crime."

Pc Lawlor has only been a LAGLO for two months, but has already paid visits to several local groups to speak about her role and answer any questions people may have.

She said she does not think homophobic crime is a major issue in the Basingstoke area, but says that many such crimes are not reported for a variety of reasons.

"Some people believe their issues won't be taken seriously or have a fear of being outed' to family or friends if they report any incidents to police," she explained.

Pc Lawlor wants to reassure people that all crimes, no matter what motive, are treated seriously and the gay community can be sure that any reports will be treated discreetly if necessary.

She is also keen to dispel any stereotypes that exist around gay people becoming police officers.

She said: "I have never had any issues over my sexuality in relation to my job. My sergeant and inspector have been very supportive and I think it helps that I can draw on my own experiences, and those of friends, in dealing with sensitive cases."

Hampshire Constabulary was named as the joint-top gay-friendly force in the UK and the third best public and private sector employer of lesbian, gay and bisexual workers.

It will feature in the "Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2008", which showcases Britain's top 100 organisations committed to eliminating discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.
