Winchester car club launched

A CAR club has been launched in Winchester where motorists can take the wheel for £5 per hour.

The first four vehicles in the city's new WhizzGo fleet were unveiled outside the Guildhall today (May 9).

The company provides the fuel, servicing, road tax, insurance, cleaning, and breakdown recovery. It aims to give motorists a cheaper option to running their own vehicles.

Founder and managing director of WhizzGo, Charlotte Morton, added: "This is a fantastically convenient service. The car is right on your doorstep and we take away all the hassle of owning a car."

The firm already operates car clubs in 12 cities across Britain, including Southampton.

The Winchester scheme will start with four new silver-coloured vehicles - a pair of Citroen C1s and two Citroen C3s - and could be extended if it takes off.

Club members can book a car by phone or online up to 30 minutes before the vehicle is required.

Winchester City Council is supporting the scheme, and is providing parking bays for the four Citroens. The spaces will be at the Jewry Street, Colebrook Street, Gladstone Street, and Middle Brook Street car parks.

The council's head of access and infrastructure, Andy Hickman, added: "It's great to have a car club in Winchester. I think it will be a real bonus for both residents and businesses, offering them flexibility in how they make their travel choices.

"A considerable amount of traffic growth in recent years has been due to the increasing levels of second-car ownership and we think that car clubs can offer a real alternative for those users."

Whizz Go says that its scheme not only reduces the cost of motoring, but the amount of miles that people drive, leading to less pollution.

Last year, Winchester was named as having the largest carbon footprint per person of any British city.

St Albans, which was the runner up, launched a WhizzGo scheme in mid March.
