WHEN it comes to being environmentally friendly, Romsey’s shoppers have it in the bag.
Saturday’s plastic bag-free day was a hit with shoppers and Romsey’s town centre manager said she was amazed at how many people had taken up the green challenge.
Christine Cole, who, with the Fairtrade group, organised the Romsey Plastic Bag-Free Day, said: “A lot of people are already converted and had their cotton Romsey Bags with them at the town hall exhibition.
“We gave away 50 reusable bags, but it took a long time to get rid of them so many people already had one.
“We are very pleased with the response. Romsey is rising to the challenge. A lot of businesses in the town are now offering more sustainable bags and people are using them.”
Among the stands at the Plastic Bag-Free day were Transition Towns, Better Bags for Romsey, Waitrose, Fair Trade and staff from Test Valley’s environmental services and Vandanamu, suppliers of the tailor-made eco-shopping bags for Romsey.
Free tea and coffee went down well with the visitors to the event.
Both the mayor of Romsey, John Ray, and Test Valley’s Ian Hibberd were at the event.
Romsey shopping bags are available in three different styles and for sale at £1.99 and 99p from various shops supporting the green-bag initiative.
