Experts lined up for flood forum

The reappearance of floods is still a risk in Romsey and the Romsey and District Society's planned Flood Defence Forum is attracting a good response.

It will be held in the Crosfield Hall tomorrow (Saturday) from 9am to 1.30pm. More than 100 people are expected and they will hear various experts talk about aspects of flooding.

Phoebe Merrick, Society Chairman said 'Free tickets are still available from the Town Hall and a ticket is needed to be sure of a place at the Forum. They can also be obtained by e-mail from cheryljcollier@ntlworld.com.

The morning will be opened by Phoebe who will describe the town's network of streams.

This will be followed by speakers who will discuss both the risks to Romsey and possible responses to it.

Sandy Dunn, an experienced Chartered Insurance Broker, will explain how the extreme weather events and demographic change have had an impact on our insurance.

Coping strategies will be addressed by local Civil Engineer, Ian Tripp, who has worked for the Environment Agency's Southern Region on flood defence schemes and improvements to flood plain mapping. He will give a picture of Romsey's existing flood defences and how they might be improved.

Hampshire County Council's Senior Emergency Planning Officer, Julie James, is the person with the task of co-ordinating the county's flood plan, for which she is eminently qualified. Since leaving the Royal Navy she worked for London Underground as an Emergency Planning Manager and was in-volved in the response to the July 7 bombings in London before joining Hampshire.

Test Valley will be represented by Steve Lees, of the Planning Policy Unit and he will talk about 'Managing Flood Risk'.

Tony Coates is a man with experience of flooding in his community. He was chairman of Hambledon Parish Council during the floods of 2000 and 2001, which devastated parts of the village. He is also a Board Member of the National Flood Forum so is ideally placed to cover both national and local matters.
