McGoldrick to be loaned out for family reasons

Saints will consider loaning young striker David McGoldrick to Nottingham Forest for family reasons.

The 19-year-old hitman, who was born in the East Midlands city, has a young family in Nottingham and is keen to be nearer to them.

League One side Forest have already approached Saints about taking McGoldrick, who Saints signed from Notts County in 2004, on loan.

George Burley has had to weigh up his options with McGoldrick currently fifth choice striker but potentially promoted up the pecking order if the sale of Kenwyne Jones goes through this week.

But if Saints were to use the money from Jones to sign another forward - or if a striker came to St Mary's in any deal involving Jones - it would make sense to let McGoldrick out for the sake of his family.

A loan move would also allow him to get more games than he would if he stayed at St Mary's.

in my humble opinion it would be better to loan out BWP and keep McGoldrick who I feel is the more natural goalscorer and would/should now get more opportunity in the team with the imminent departure of Jones. BWP would get games every week with forest which is what he needs to get himself sharpened up and we would finally get the chance to have a proper look at McGoldrick here at SMS. hopefully arrangements could be made to bring his young family here to further help him settle.

George Burley should definately KEEP David McGoldrick at StMarys as Jones is now shortly to be off to pastures new. McGoldrick is a class act and needs 'nursing' along and given opportunities by this Saints Manager. The money raised from the sale of Jones should be spent entirely on our defence and not wasted on a forward when we already have a future star in McGoldrick. Jones was given the opportunity, now it is Dave McGoldricks' turn. He is a much more naturally gifted player than Jones ever was or Blackstock/Best ever were. With his already proven goalscoring prowess for the reserves and Burley's reputed ability of working with talented youngsters let us keep the guy and allow Saints fans the opportunity of watching another tremendous youngster come through the ranks. Hopefully to end more like Drew Surman and Nathan Dyer than Baird, Bale or Walcott!

I agree, If David has family problems the club should be on hand to support him. This is exactly what Saints should be about.

However it states “young family” it suggests that this means he needs to be near the mother of his child. She in turn will want to be around her family.

It’s a tough one. He is a great player and this could have equally been his break though season.

McGoldrick is the BEST player on the books! Funny how all our best footballers have been homegrown for years now. Delap, Higginbottom,Prutton et al were way out of their depth in the Premiership, but Prost's youngsters all look comfortable on the ball.

I feel that if the poor boy is missing his family all parties would be best served by letting McGoldrick come home. We will give him a few games and developing him so you can have him back ship-shape in a few months. Hopefully we will be sat pretty at the top of the league by then. Thanks for your continued support of the club!

I think if we can spare him for a few months on a strict recall clause (in case of emergencies) to help him with his family issues then I'm sure NF will look after him and help him to develop. But I agree with the guys above, he must realise he has a brilliant opportunity to break into the first team here at St Mary's. If we sell him I'm going to be well upset.

The report says he "has a young family in Nottingham and is keen to be nearer them". Let's hope this is not the first step towards leaving us for a small or no fee. Anyone know how long he has on his contract? If the Saints are keen to keep him then perhaps they can help him with temporary accommodation for his "young family" to visit him during the season, that way he and his family will hopefully be happy, allowing him to concentrate on playing football for the Saints.

Am I being stupid here? Surely the answer is for his family to move to Southampton? Not sure that Roy Keane would be loaning his players out to be closer to their families!!

No Simon - you're not being stupid. I suspect that there is an agent at work again here. Jones came over from Trinidad at 19 with one child in tow. Hammill is living in Ocean Village with his girlfriend and he's younger than McGoldrick. More to this than meets the eye.

This alleged "family reason" has to be the weakest excuse I've heard from the club since Kenwyne's hamstring "injury". After all, it must take hours to get from Nottingham to Southampton. Sadly, it's been painfully obvious for quite some time that Burley does not rate McGoldrick and that he (or seemingly any of our academy graduates) has no future at this club.

actually it takes ages to travel from southampton to nottingham and the trains are not direct. i wouldn't want to commute, nor would i want my young child in one city whilst i was in the other.

however, if saints really valued him they might find an alternative solution....
