GLENN Hoddle has ruled himself out of the running to become the new Southampton manager.

The former England boss, who was in charge of Saints from January 2000 until March 2001, had been linked with a possible return to the club.

However, the 50-year-old last night declared he would not be putting his name forward, due to his new academy project in Spain.

"At the moment I am right in the middle of getting my academy up and running in Spain," he said.

"While I am flattered to be linked to a return to Southampton, it isn't right for me now.

"If it was not for the academy, I would definitely give it serious consideration.

"But the academy is very important to me. I have been developing it for 14 months, and am talking to potential investors."

Coleman did an amazing job keeping Fulham in the premiership for several seasons on a tight budget. He is young, honest and comes with no baggage. Ince or Johnson would be next best bets.
I hope we don't drag this out too long as the players don't need any more excuses to feel unsettled.

Not good news.

There are other decent candidates, but there are also a good few names in the frame that would be a disaster for Saints, but who I could see getting the job.

He'd only be short term and I'm sure he'd be quick to be the next Judas to head to a bigger job when available, but the best of those candidates now must be Paul Ince.

The fact is though that he is that rare type of character that you believe could achieve anything in a very short space of time.

He may even have the Roy Keane factor we need to get us close this season.

Importantly, unlike any former Saints candidates, he is also used to winning things and would set very high expectations.

He would hate losing, and that's something Burley hasn't displayed in recent months.

Excellent news!
Coleman should be no1 choice, Ince 2nd choice.
The rest - forget it.

We have Norwich coming up next week, and we need to win it - get the new man in place now!

I don't know why people are backing Coleman to get the job.He hasn't done that well in management,at Fulham he had money to spend finished mediocre mid-table and in Spain his performance can only be seen as very average in their second division.
Johnston or Ince for me.Dowie a possibility too.

Why all the interest in Ince? Coleman at least has experience, what's Ince done?

Dell Boy, Nursling says...
11:24am Fri 25 Jan 08

This is bad news but would Hoddle have returned anyway in view of the nutter fans attitude after Sturock. But for them we would still be in the premiership.
That just leaves Coleman as a worthwile applicant but can we afford him? Forget anyone who is any good and employed because we wouldn't be able to find the compensation. As for the idiots who keep stating they prefer Big Sam why would he come? We have no money to spend and therefore his rake off would be zero! However, one advantage is that he would be close to his buddy Arry!!!

When you say he's a complete a**e and wind-up merchant are you talking about Davies or Strachan?!

They are very similar in terms of style, including the football they play.

Strachan's record didn't exactly fill us with confidence when he took charge and he was far from a popular choice, so whoever gets it needs to be given a clean slate.

Either Ince and Davies would be the top men for me now Hoddle's out because they'd give everyone at the club a kick up the backside and restore some passion and ambition.

I can't understand people getting too excited about Coleman, but he's neither excelled or disgraced himself, so it would be anybody's guess whether he'd do well or badly.

Hank, says...

They say your luck comes in 3's. Burley has left, Hoddle rules himself out of the saints vacancy, and the share price is up over 20% in the last couple of days.

Easy to say, difficult to quantify!
The club started to fall apart after Lowe failed to back WGS after the cup final, WGS had enough and left and then Lowe appointed Sturrock, no disrespect to Sturrock but Lowe made the wrong appointment!
However, I do not want to dwell on the past, we have to look to the future now and IMO Hoddle ain't the future for this club!
Coleman or Ince can turn this club around given the chance and who knows some new investment might materialise know that GB has gone!

Yam Yam Saint, Dudley, West Midlands says...
12:41pm Fri 25 Jan 08

Ince? I can't understand why he is being considered. The problem I have with him is
he has not really proved himself in club management. And before anyone says look at his
record with MK Dons (W20 L8 D5) his time at Macclesfield were hardly inspired (W14 L13 D8) and swiftly legged it.

Now, say if he had got MKD promoted two seasons running and got them into the championship, maybe then I would want him around, but having a team put together a couple of good runs in a very weak league or the fact that he can 'motivate' the dressing room (i.e shout a lot at half time) does not cut it with me on the sales pitch I'm afraid.

But then neither do any of the other names thrown around since Wednesday - Coleman, Adams, Big Sam, Souness...

He will know a lot of up and coming european talent and have the contacts to bring them to saints.

Ince, Adams and Coleman do not seem the right type to push on up the table with. Just look at their records.

I'm confused why anyone believes Ince would be a good manager for Saints? He has no relationship or history with the club or the South and inevitably would only want to use us as a stepping stone to get himslef a job in the Premier League. If we are serious about having some continuity, he is the last manager we want in.
If he had any degree of success, which i'm not sure the self proclaimed "Guv'nor" would, then someone like Middlesbrough would see it as an endorsement of his ability and step in and give him a job when their incumbent manager fails.
Stepping stone Saints does it again and we get no where.
Surely everyone should be able to see that as the outcome of any success with Ince?

Ince is just not a creditable candidate. He is far too underqualified and puts our club at even more risk than under Burley. If he succeeds in any way shape or form then he is off. Pointless and beyond stupid.

This appointment must be as risk free as possible. I could understand it if there were no other possibles around (like when we got Sturrock) but right now there are clearly other far more qualified and suitable candidates with superior track records out there with Premiership teams or even getting teams out of this league. Us fans deserve much more than being subjected to another possible wigley or gray, an ex player with management "potential" at a big club like ours.

Spurs fan in peace, Glenn is my hero, also Southampton always have special place in my heart, Hoddle stated recently he is interested to give rejected youngsters a second chance to prove their worth, he is trying to prove point and learn something about that which could benfit himself in his next job aas well and that's why he rejected 8 jobs before ( Norwich, Q.P.R, Bolton, Fulham etc .. ) and he wasn't interested at all. But at least, he said good words about Saints

"At the moment I am right in the middle of getting my academy up and running in Spain," he said.

"While I am flattered to be linked to a return to Southampton, it isn't right for me now.

"If it was not for the academy, I would definitely give it serious consideration.

"But the academy is very important to me. I have been developing it for 14 months, and am talking to potential investors."

so, he didn't rule out the return to Southampton at one day as he still loves the club. I really hope he will come back.

some people still don't like him, but it washard for him to snub Tottenham as they are his love since child, played there 11 years and he was legend as well. Hoddle is loyal man and even when he sacked at spurs, he left with very low terms.

Took over PNE in Nov 04 with Preston hovering just above relegation placing and we ended up at Cardiff against West Ham in May 05: 2nd season took us on a 24 game unbeaten streak, only to lose in the play offs when we were clearly the best of the 4 teams. Went to Derby and took over a club that was decimated and just survived releation. Got them straight to the Prem even though they were nothing more than a mid table CCC team. Was given £10 million to spend with a team that wasnt good enough anywhere on the pitch. Roy Keane has spent nearly £50 million on an alredy better team and they are still looking like relegation candidates. Paul Jewell has done even worse. You may not like him, but even a very mediocre team like Southampton with no star players left, could still make the playoffs with him in charge!!

Its a sad day yet again - on a positive note - at least George has gone now, i thought he was losing the plot a bit towards the end, and he is closer to all those distilleries in bonny Scotland !!! he must be a happy man !!!

Nobody has mentioned Mike Newell at all? He is a good manager. What about Gary Johnson? He is doing great with Bristol City and did very well with Yeovil. Paul Ince has no experience at Championship level!

Poor form from the Echo not to credit Sky Sports News with this. Always quick to claim an "exclusive" for themselves but never reference the other media sources for 95% of their Saints news.
Duhh... Yeah, right!
Because media organisations are always crediting their rivals with being first to the story, aren't they?
What you claim is "poor form" is in fact standard practice for any news organisation. If you get the story first, you let people know by putting an exclusive tag on it and if someone else has already run it you don't say where it came from (unless you are writing the Ceefax football gossip page).
But then you'd know that if you were, as you claim, a "journo".
Some of the cr@p that people like you come out with in these comment sections just never ceases to amaze me.
If you think the Echo does such a bad job, go get your Saints news somewhere else.
