Salz speculation hotting up

WEALTHY Saints fans Gavyn Davies and Anthony Salz could be about to come to Saints' financial rescue.

The pair are the stand-out names being bandied about as potential buyers of the club after Saints released a statement to the stock exchange yesterday that discussions with "certain third parties" were at an early stage.

Saints shares were sent surging by more than 13 per cent at one stage as news of the approach broke.

The statement read: "The Board of Southampton confirms that it is in discussions with certain third parties in relation to an investment in or a possible offer for the Company.

There is no certainty any such offer or investment will be made and discussions are at an early stage. Further an-nouncements will be made in due course when necessary."

The development came just hours after the Daily Echo published an exclusive photograph from Saturday's clash at Crystal Palace that placed Salz next to Saints chairman Leon Crouch.

Salz has recently been linked to the vacant post of Saints PLC chairman and was previously part of a consortium - including Davies and Sir David Frost - interested in the buying the club.

The pair made their fortunes in banking and the law with Davies said to be worth £165m.

Would be nice if it happens as Salz & Davies are both life long fans. Think its best to put this sort of news to the back of your mind until it's all in black & white and signed & sealed. We've been in this loop before and only ended up disappointed.

lifelong fans ?
and it has taken them this long to think about buying in ?
let's get real , they know more about the inside dealings previous to this and also know the stuff about rupert and his gang.the attitude of fans toward anyone who cannot bring instant success,
ie; as hard as Jason tries he doesn't stand a chance.
I really hope this is not another false dawn, is not just the Echo starting another rumour to boost sales
to support the saints is all that a local can be asked
to have a successsful club is all we dream about !

Come on Leon, you are close to becoming a local legend!!!
Good luck to everyone involved in the negotiations, I urge every Saints fans to show their 12th man support on Saturday and cheer from the rafters of St Marys to prove that we are premier supporters in a premier stadium fully deserving a premier ship team that new investment can help build.

There is no need to appoint a manager right now!

My guess is that any deal will depend upon the price at which they have to buy out the current shareholders. If you remember the Wolves major shareholder gave the shares away as long as the money was put into the club. we do not have shareholders that wealthy or benevolent methinks. Do you think Rupert is going to do the decent thing re his shares? ...... me neither

I agree there was no evidence for Paul Allen but I do not think this is complete tosh.

There is an official bid at the Stock Exchange it may not come to anything like the SISU bid but it may do so.

I dont understand why the board are a joke they are trying to get investment which is time consumming.

I agree entirely. The fans (the genuine ones) must back the Club whole heartedly at this time. Let's show the prospective investors that we are worthy of their interest. Stand up if you love the Saints! If you don't, just keep quiet.

If Salz and Davies are part of the deal, we should count our blessings that we have genuine businessmen on our side. We don't need the mafia types or other dodgy characters who seem to be bankrolling a lot of other clubs.

How do you know the Paul Allen rumours were complete rubbish - for all we know he may have had an initial interest, even if it was just an enquiry.

No apologies as anyone could turn round and be negative or sceptical cos if you are wrong then everything turns out rosy anyway.

The board are not a joke - they are people with SFC somewhere in their heart, they have got rid of the jokers and are trying to take the club forward even if it means their departure, but this will take some time so for Matt's sake give them a break!

I have a good feeling about things this time. UTS.

At the time. the "Paul Allen" approach was a genuine one, as notified to the Stock Market, and was due to be followed up provided the board fulfilled certain criteria - the main one being resisting the sale of Gareth Bale and other leading players to another club.

With the board's lack of investment/commitmen
t, they just saw pound signs in their eyes, and lo and behold, the potential takeover was suddenly a lot less of an attractive proposition once Bale and co had left the club.

Now, with a slightly more stable situation, and the most exciting players such as Surman/Dyer/Safri etc staying for the foreseeable future, and a new management team to be announced, the club is ready to start talks with new investors for realistic takeover talks to begin the rebuilding of the Football club, and eventual return to the Premiership.

The club needs your support - Come on you reds!

Believe me this deal is in the pipeline, it's easier than the Paul Allen deal.

Paul Allen did have an Interest in us, and that soon faded after in depth talks. Whatever his reasons for pulling out of any deal are going to be kept between them, but their was interest and at first appeared to be 100% on board.

With this Takeover it is completely different, Salz has held talks, is a fan and knows just about everything going on with Saints, unlike outsiders.
He will invest and does want the best for the club and see's now as the best time to pull us up and throw us back into the ring for the big battles of the Premiership.

The appointment of Manager will NOT take place until this deal concludes.
Salz has issued a say in who takes over and see's Paul Ince, Stuart Pearce, Glenn Hoddle, Chris Coleman and the big outsider Sam Allardyce as the only men worth being in charge.
Paul Ince has claimed he will not leave MK's until he is satisfied it wont holt there Promotion (automatic).
Glenn Hoddle has stated that if they can keep Gorman as Carteaker until the Summer he will count himself in.
Stuart Pearce has NOT held any talks but has been offered support in keeping with the U21's should he be interested, but he has NOT been talked to directly.
Chris Coleman's agent has insisted that he is interested in the job, but wants to know where the club are going and that any takeover talks, are completed before he is given the job. He has fears of a repeat at Real Sociadad where the President did not agree with his views.
Sam Allardyce has NOT been contacted, nor has the club issued a Interest to his Agent, his name has only been mentioned as a ''Would get the team places in 4-5years''.

This has all come from the club and can be taken as 100%!!

Roman Abramovich has an older, richer, brother. He has got the hump with Roman's antics and is going to buy saints and put Mourinho in charge. Mourinho has a clause that forbids him from joining another Premiership team this season but he can join a championship team and sees this oportunity as the perfect ticket to get his own back on Chelsea / Abramovich jr for meddling with club affairs. The Anthony Salz thing is just a smoke screen. My money is on Mourinho.

It's the honest truth, I swear, I know because my milkmans, window cleaners, second cousin removed once saw Leon Crouch from a distance, well it might have been Leon Crouch, certianlty looked like him, he said. Mind you he does have no eyes....

This week's board are trying to do the right thing and there's no way the report is complete tosh - as a number of people seem to believe - the club has, as the law states in such circumstances, released a statement to the stock market.

It all dependson whether the investors are willing to put up extra money to solve the capital requirement for the expansion of St Marys and are they prepared to pay Lowe for his shares? You have to remember that Lowe acquired his shares as opposed to buying them.

Last time I spoke to Salz, he expressed absolutely no interest in getting involved in Saints other than the fact that he is a shareholder. But so am I.

He may have changed his mind but I doubt it. Also, he's a lawyer - much richer than you or I but will not be able to inject massive funds. He does however have good contacts, who could.

But, frankly, if this happens, I'll be well shocked.

Great news if true, though hopefully with support from other (richer) investors too!

There has been talk of another investor (can't remember his name, but it starts with a 'B'!). He is evidently something like the 75th richest person in Britain (or is it the world?) He is worth something like £750 million. Read the sticky thread on The Saints Forum for more details.

Also, I like the sound of Jordan leaving Pompey to become our manager. I rather suspect it is he, rather than Redkrapp or Donkey Adams, that has been responsible for Pompey's recent success, so to rob them of that, while improving Saints can be nothing but a great thing!

Joe Jordon coming to manage Saints, there is more chance of Jordon becoming the next manager. Might not be a bad idea she's good up front. Let's hope this story about these investors is not another false dawn. If we keep getting rid of our best players we will soon be having a local derby with the Cherries. Why couldn't Bolton of taken Wright Phillips on loan and couldn't Euell of gone to germany!

well at the moment this is all speculation

however if this were to be true then lets hope these people have a good long term vision for the club with an adequate amount of funds to invest in players (for the short at the very least)

it is obvious as well that the manager decision is likely to be stalled until this situation is sorted first, and i think that in the meantime the two in charge can do a more than capable job, so even if it drags on a bit like last time it wont be the worst thing in the world to have them in caretaking given the recent response by the players.

as saints fans we can only pray that this time, 3rd time lucky (righty suggested), this is the one to take us out of the mire we have been in and get back to where we surely belong - we have the set-up, we have the stadium, we have the fans, we just need a kick-start to reignite our once brilliant club.

Of course I have something to say!

A weak FA, that lets Manchester City renage on a deal that the FA claim had gone through.

You, of course, would be familiar with people who promise one thing, and deliver either nothing, or something entirely different eg I will bring investers on board - and you are still waiting!

The deal is not based on 75 starts before there is another payment, it is incremental (for your information, that means so much paid after so many games, reaching the full cash after 75 games). Maybe there is also a 'sell on' deal, like you, I don't know the ins and outs of the deal.

Regarding the Defoe deal, and the cashflow just aint right! Well, unlike some clubs that have to let their players go out on loan because they can't afford to pay their wages, Portsmouth endeavour to balance their books on deals, We appear to have lost a bit on this one, but I bet a pound to a pinch of snuff, that we have not been 'in the red' on others.

Perhaps your board could take some lessons.
If they had invested their parachute money wisely, they may have found themselves with a team that are heading for promotion, rather than in the opposite direction.

ps. I note that a statement has been issued by The South Coast's ONLY Premier League Club that Defoe is a Pompey player, NOT on loan as has been claimed in some circles!

Well done, outstanding work, my money is on him getting to 74 and then getting the boot. Meanwhile Pompey shell out £8-12m on Defoe. The cashflow just aint quite right here... Care to explain Sam? No doubt you will have something to say on this.

Pompey is an island, it's the
only island city in the country, and that makes it very insular, an inward

Why are we talking about Pompey deals. Can't we all make a pact to ignore these posts!!!!!!!

I don't know about anyone else but these rumours feel more genuine than the last lot. The Allen story never really stood up and SISU was a waste of time. Fingers crossed.

We need to push for Gorman and Dodd to stay until some bigger decisions are made and see if we can give youth a chance until the end of the season to give them some experience.

The simple reason you are all talking about Pompey deals is because you dont have any of your own and you are all JEALOUS.
We may well loose a few grand on the Benjani sale but we will more than make up for it IF we ever sell DEFOE or DIARRA. They will both be worth £20million each after a year or so with Harry. In fact DIARRA is probably already worth that now !

Evening all,
Bringing the conversation back to what REALLY matters, I for one am extremely positive about this potential new era for the club. I really think that this time there is something concrete behind the rumours, namely Salz being at the CP game, rather than it being all speculation as with the Allen and SISU bids.

I've got complete faith in Leon Crouch to act in the best interests of the club and it's time that we pulled together as saints fans and show support to him and the club by getting crowds of at least 22,000 for the rest of the season!

Oh and Pompey fans, I'm man enough to congratulate you for your recent success, but it aint half pathetic that you come on here every day with your unhelpful, childish comments. Just leave us to dream on our own!

Great news of more interest in Saints. I really hope that they are willing to put in enough money to see the books straight. It is an incredibly expensive business financing a new stadium, we are finding more teams strugling with the extra outlay. If we are to look at our repayments we are only the equivalent to 10000 gate each game. Financial restructuring has been the game for many new investors. Other clubs are either playthings or retirement projects to chairmen, some are even just property investors looking for a deal. When they do not find it they look to move on.
I do not want Saints to be in the hands of investors or playboys. They can bring success but in the end leave the club with just some days in the sun. The real football chairmen look after the club, take time and care in investing in its future, build a new stadium, new training facilities, give money to the right managers for players that will improve the team. Unfortunatly this is sometimes not enough as there are too many investors and playboys. Then it all gets crowded and confused, then some years later they all move to a different league, a different sport. They move their money into a new more exciting and fruitful project. Then for a little while there is a more little level feild again. Then the clubs that run their club properly rise again. I remember about a year or more ago reading about a chap who brought a significant sum of shares for an investment. This is my main worry. That now share prices will rise again to levels too expensive for a good set of owners to justify. There are lots of shareholders who are just looking for a good return. It is interesting to see how little the market value of Saints shares have really changed since relegation. It is said that investors generally look for returns over 5 year periods. Good luck to you Mr Salz if you are really interested. From what I have read about you and the company you keep you really could be a godsend to this club.

I'm heartened by the more serious comments made on this take-over news. As a life long fan you have to try and believe the positive news in favour of all the negative stuff when you only have the echo for information. In the event of Mr Saltz and Davies taking over, this could signal a return to old school standards, off and on the pitch. I also think that a continuation of shedding players like Rasiak and Skacel and bringing in players with heart will promote a club attitude that is no longer a flakey one. I for one will be hoping our prayers will be answered. COYR

The South Coast's ONLY Premier league club!!! How long were you lot playing 2nd fiddle to the mighty Saints, you have got some years to catch up yet.. Me being the optimist foresees a bright future where Saints get investment and achieves a top 4 spot in May (not November!!). Whilst Pompey's manager Mr Fish Face gets arrested for more slippery skate deals and spends 3 years in Parkhurst and the club will be relegated with a 30 point penalty. This leaves the Skates in that wonderful back garden Fratton Park!!! You will be back where you belong Skates, give it time....

What makes you so sure the posts in question are from genuine Pompey suporters? They are just as likely to be the ravings of locals who get a kick out of winding up the more simple minded Saints fans.
Let's face it, most of the comment on this site is evidently rubbish, and the exchanges go completely off the rails when somebody lke Sailor Sam sends in a taunt.
This section is supposed to be about another rumoured take-over and over half the comment is invective against our nearest rivals. How bright is that?
