Saints caretaker manager Jason Dodd said his team was bitterly disappointed to slip to a seventh home defeat of the season.
Darren Powell got Saints off to the perfect start with a goal after just 55 seconds but two goals in the closing stages of the first half saw them trailing at half time.
QPR stretched their lead in the second period, all three goals a result of defensive errors, and it meant Stern John's late strike, after Youssef Safri had been sent off, was a mere consolation.
Dodd said: "We got off to a fantastic start and looked to build on that.
"We had two or three great chances through Stern and Bradley and if we'd have taken one of those it might have been a wee bit different but it's disappointing three mistakes cost us goals.
"That was our problem earlier in the season where individual mistakes have cost us."
Saints scored in the first and last minutes of the match but in between were taught a lesson in clinical finishing by QPR.
To make things worse Saints captain Youssef Safri is now facing a three game ban after being shown a straight red card 12 minutes from time.
Saints could hardly have got off to a better start.
Bradley Wright-Phillips chased down a ball over the top and QPR keeper Lee Camp slid to claim it but his momentum took him just outside the box.
Adam Hammill stepped up to take the free kick on the left edge and swung it into the area where Darren Powell came through a melee of players to finish in the opposite corner within a minute of the kick off.
QPR looked dangerous in attack though and Safri had to be on his guard to head away a Kieran Lee cross that looked as though it could drift in at the far post while Kelvin Davis made a comfortable save from Gavin Mahon moments later.
Stern John tried to catch Camp off guard with a quickly taken half volley from 40 yards on ten minutes but it went wide.
Hogan Ephraim couldn't quite make a clean contact when he had a yard in the box to shoot and it was an easy save straight at Davis.
Wright-Phillips had the same problem from a corner on 21 minutes with his glancing header going wide at the far post.
Martin Rowlands came close to levelling the scores two minutes later with a terrific volley from the edge of that area that flew just over the top right hand corner of Davis' goal.
It really was a very good game with both sides playing open, attacking, passing football and pushing on looking for goals.
Saints missed two glorious opportunities to double their lead in the space of a few seconds on 35 minutes.
First Andrew Surman split the defence with a terrific ball into the path of Wright-Phillips but his weak shot when through one-on-one was straight at Camp.
The QPR keeper's ball out was then intercepted and Saints found themselves with three players in behind and just Camp to beat.
Jason Euell had the ball on the right and quickly squared to Stern John who just had to side foot home from the penalty spot but skied his effort so far over the bar.
Camp was in action again three minutes later when he palmed away Andrew Davies' header from a corner.
And predictably Saints were made to pay for their wastefulness when QPR equalised on 38 minutes.
Rowan Vine charged past several despairing tackles and fed in Rowlands who finished low past the advancing Davis inside the area for 1-1.
And it got worse just before half time when QPR took the lead.
Damien Delaney put in a deep cross from the right, Patrick Agyemang had peeled off to the far post and in behind left back Jermaine Wright and side footed low past Davis from the edge of six yard box for 2-1.
That proved to be the last chance of the half and despite playing well Saints' poor finishing meant they had plenty of work to do in the second half.
Both sides made a change at half time.
Dodd and Gorman brought on Marek Saganowksi for Hammill while QPR's switch saw Akos Buzsaky replacing Kieran Lee.
Dodd and Gorman made another change on 53 minutes with Jhon Viafara coming on for Wayne Thomas.
Buzsaky became the first player in the book for a foul on Surman.
The second half wasn't as open as the first with QPR having a lead to protect and not pushing men forward and leaving gaps at the back quite as much.
And then Saints went and shot themselves in the foot with a truly comical third Rangers goal on 61 minutes.
Camp kicked a long ball from his hands and as Davis came out of his area to clear Wright decided to try and control on his knee but only succeeded in knocking the ball past his own keeper.
The chasing Agyemang ran on and grateful slid the ball home from close range under no pressure.
Powell went on to become the first Saints man in the book two minutes later.
Dodd and Gorman made a third and final change to try and get back into the game with Adam Lallana coming on for Wright-Phillips on 68 minutes.
Delaney was booked for a foul on Euell a minute later.
Lallana showed a bit of thrust and determination with a powerful run and shot from 20 yards that went just wide.
Saints were showing occasional signs of life but the fans were growing ever more frustrated.
The icing on the cake came on 78 minutes when Safri was sent off.
Agyemang had the ball and Safri thumped into a tackle winning the ball but sending the QPR man up in the air with the follow through which was deemed too aggressive and a deliberate trip and referee Anthony Taylor showed him the red card.
Former Saints striker Dexter Blackstock was introduced on 79 minutes for Agyemang.
QPR made a final change on minutes with Mikele Leigertwood replacing Ephraim.
It almost got worse for Saints as Blackstock put the ball right across the face of goal but there was no one there to tap it home.
Saints gave themselves hope when John pulled a goal.
The fourth official had just shown the board for four minutes of stoppage time when Euell's ball found John who finished across Camp into the far corner for 3-2.
Saints threw a few balls in the area but it was QPR who came closest with Buzsaky curling a shot just wide of the post and when the final whistle went the late rally proved not to be enough for Saints who slipped to another defeat.

I think it is a good idea to keep Dodd and Gorman as the caretaker managers. Firstly, if a takeover does go ahead, then it is likely the new chiarman will want to bring in the manager of his choice and this enables him to do that. Secondly, the performances under the current management have not been that bad. I thiink that promotion is a goal that is too ambitous for the current season but with some new investment and a new manager in the next few months, we can easily buy new players and make a decent push for the next season. What does this team do in training? They cannot control the ball, cannot pass the ball and don't have a clue. I am sorry to say that on recent form we will be relegated. What a mess.

Just more smokescreens to keep fans from kicking up a fuss about how our club is being so poorly run. We've won one game under Gorman & Dodd and that against Bury who are near the bottom of the 2nd division! And Bury deserved to win that game! Now the players are under no pressure again and it showed today. Too lazy (apart from Andrew Davies) no concentration, no fitness and this is the worse Saints team I have ever seen and they have the worst attitude too. Play the kids and get shot of Thomas, Euell, Wright, Wright-Phillips, Powell and SternJohn.

I've got a lot to get off my chest.
Poor performance, started well, just went downhill after that. I was at the game, shame on those fans that left half an hour before the end, call yourself real supporters?
Our defece today was appalling, all three goals (especially the 3rd) could've been avoided. How does Jason Euell get into the starting 11 every week, he is useless.
Message to the board, lets face it, Gorman and Dodd need to be replaced. The only reason the players like them is probably because they're given an easy time in training, fitness and concentration levels out there today were at an all time low. We need a no nonsense manager to come in and tell the likes of Euell, Wright-Phillips etc to shape up or **** out.
Also, Leon Crouch, try harder to get some investment in, every rumour about being linked with a takeover seems to be a false dawn. Do your job!
Think thats it for now

I don't see all you Sados playing for Saints. He gives 110 percent every bloody week. Anyway, as for your team mullingar, if we field them we will lose more like 100-0. Davis is on good form at the moment apart from that blunder yesterday. Ostlund is injured most of the time and a waste of space the other time. Powell played ok yesterday but could be out for another two months even if he just stubs his toe. Davies is good. As for O'Halloran, he is awful. He just gives the ball away all the time on his debut and scores an own goal while playing for Ireland in the under 21's. As for Viafara he is good when he's in the mood, otherwise he just walks around the field daydreaming. He has been "ill" over the last couple of weeks but many people think he's on his way out. Lallana played very well when he came on against QPR, I agree with you on that choice. Surman tries hard but usually gives the ball away. But, I think he could improve. As for Idiakez, he is past it. Ex Derby (that can't be good) and he's another one like Powell who just sits around on his bum all day, and when he plays he gets injured straight away. Stern John missed a complete sitter on Saturday but he holds the ball up well and with a bit of support he could help us get a few goals. Finally Mcgoldrick. He is a good goalscorer but I have a feeling that he can get a bit greedy and that is not what Saints need.
You cannot blame this performance on Gorman and Dodd - the players let them and themselves down very badly on Saturday. There was no passion or commitment and they could not string two passes to each other. Heads need to roll and players need to selected who would openly give their all to the cause! Young Lallana came on and was a breathe of fresh air - at last we have someone who can beat people in the middle of the park and have the confidence to then shoot on goal - quite a novelty for us to have a player like that!! Team against Stoke should be: Davis Ostlund(if fit) Powell Davies O\'Halloran Viafara Lallana Surman Idiakez John McGoldrick I only pick John because it looks like Saga has lost all ability and confidence! The players are at fault, not the management team, we need to get behind Gorman and Dodds, there is no else!!

But we were NOT selling because we were SKINT, as some clubs have to do, but to replace a good striker with a better one. Of course, with the vast sums that have been made by way of compensation from the SFA for your most popular manager, Burley, and the money saved by sending your players out on loan, to save on wages, you could, of course, come up with the cash and bought Benjani yourself! I wonder why Stains didn\'t? Could cash crisis be a reason? What happened to the cash received from THE SOUTH COAST\'S ONLY PREMIER LEAGUE CLUB for Martin Cranie? What about the cash received for Theo Walcott? I note that a certain Rasiak was playing for Bolton on Saturday, didn\'t a player of that name play for your lot? Sold! Bridge? Sold! Bale? Sold! Cranie? Sold! Walcott? Sold! Reading a lot of the comments on recent games, I guess that you are not referring to Surman! With all the money received from the above, and others whose names escape me, you still cannot attract investors or a manager, with Alan Shearer being the latest to distance himself from his old stamping ground! Whoopee! You have a \'state of the art\' stadium! But what a state your club and team are in! Hardly \'state of the art\'! When I go to football, I go to watch PREMIER LEAGUE FOOTBALL, PLAYED BY A TEAM OF PREMIER QUALITY. I do not go to admire the architecture! If that is your thing, good luck! Enjoy! On saturday you would have had the choice of over 10,000 empty seats from which to admire the building! Probably a better sight than what was on display! In Freefall without the benefit of a parachute!Yes you are selling because you are skint, your owner wants out asap. If you were not skint, why sell a 9million pound player for a fraction of that price. Why wait until you have sold that player,in order to replace him. Why lie about buying a player when infact it was only a loan, and you still have not brought him, check the fa website out. You are fooked,YOU HAVE NOT GOT THE LAND,and thats the bottom line. We will get investment, lets face it,if your shower of **** can get investment, fook me we are more than guaranteed investment, not if, but when. As for attracting managers your assistant managers, not a problem, we have already turned Joe Jordan DOWN. As for crowds dont even go there, check out the attendance at SMS and fratton park when both teams played at home a few weeks ago,let me remind you that Saints absolutely smashed your attendance, and you were giving free tickets away to the RN. Giving the fact that you are watching the likes of Arsenal, manure and chelsea, are your average attendances any better than Saints for this season, pathetic. You are above Saints because of one thing, money, now its gone, the honeymoon period is well and truly over for pfc.

It was a shame that Benjani was transferred, but football is a business, and Defoe will, I am certain, score more goals. Selling at a loss? Yes! I wonder why Stains didn\\\\\\\'t? Could cash crisis be a reason? What happened to the cash received from THE SOUTH COAST\\\\\\\'S ONLY PREMIER LEAGUE CLUB for Martin Cranie? princey boy wrote:Hi Princess! Still 'Twitter and Bisted'! Instead of believing your own clap trap, try reading what has been written by your colleagues, who appear to be more aware of the current situation at SMS than you are. So our owner wants to sell asap because he is skint! That is why he sold Benjani for less than he paid for Defoe. Diarra, Auben and Baros have also arrived to strengthen the team - not sent out on loan because we can't afford to pay their wages. If you had a little knowledge, you would know that the process is quicker to register a loan deal than a transfer deal. Because of the time factor, Defoe was registered as a loan, then the transfer was compelted. No Lie, just knowledge. We have not got the land! True! The club are currently in negotiation with MOD. I seem to recall that SFC tried for a number of sites before they were shunted to the gasworks site! You will get investment! You were promised that investors would be found when Rupert got the bum's rush. They have been conspicuous by their absence! You have turned Joe Jordan down! IF YOU HAD, then that is another indication of your board's incompetence! I prefer to believe Joe Jordan, who has a better track record of telling the truth than your board of directors, when he says that he has never applied! (If he did, I doubt that SFC could cough up with the compensation!) I have checked out the attendances. SFC regularly have 10,000+ unoccupied seats. PFC may have, at max, 2000 unoccupied seats, mainly because a lot of fans think there will be a full house and they will not get tickets. Also, they know that, being a PREMIER LEAGUE CLUB, they will be able to see virtually all of the match on SKY Football First - for which PFC get a revenue, and which SFC lost when their parachute no longer opened! Giving away tickets to the RN. Perhaps that has something to do with the proposed site of the new ground, and the current owners! Average attendance! We cannot exceed the ground capacity. I can assure you, we have never had one third of our seats empty for a league game. As our record gate, when there were terraces, is 51,000+, I feel certain that, with the increase in population, we would have no trouble filling a 'state of the art' stadium that you boast of. We would do it because we have 'state of the art' footballers - which is what people come to see! We are about Stains because of one thing, money! Correct! True! That's right! The money that SFC received in transfer fees over the years has evaporated, and you have nothing to show for it! Oh! The 'state of the art stadium' I hear you say! Surely that was financed by the sale of The Dell for housing, while SMS was built on an industrial site, unfit for housing - ie cheap! PFC's money was spent on building a team - the reason we come to Fratton Park, the home of THE SOUTH COAST'S ONLY PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM! You have a nice, new stadium with a 'rag-tag' bunch of journeymen players, who are taking the club downward instead of upwards. If Pompey's honeymoon period is well and truly over, I guess that means we now settle down to live happily ever after. SFC? Well, everything seems to be coming apart at the seams, so I guess that not only is the honeymoon over (if there was ever a marriage), you appear to be heading for an inevitable breakdown, with an appearance in the divorce courts (administration) a near certainty! No wonder you are a Bitter Princess from Bittern! Bittern:- Large wading marsh bird with a booming call! Seems to sum you up Princess! Up to your knees in the brown and smelly, while making a lot of noise, but not a lot of sense! SAD! SO VERY SAD!sailor sam wrote: Hi Princess! or should I say, \\\\\\\'Bitter from Bittern\\\\\\\'!
