Dodd: Some players let the fans down

JASON DODD said he felt some of the Saints players let themselves and the fans down as the team crashed out of the FA Cup 1-0 at Bristol Rovers.

In a massively disappointing display Saints conceded an unfortunate late goal to deny them a replay but created very little themselves throughout.

Dodd was both angry and disappointed with the performance of his and John Gorman's players with the caretaker bosses having now won just once in seven games.

He said: "Fair play to Bristol Rovers but for some reason they wanted it more than us which is hard to believe to be honest.

"As we've said the last five or six games we've been playing quite well.

"At Stoke in the second half who are top of the table we played fantastic.

"We knew it would be difficult on the pitch but it was the same for both sides but they adapted to it better than we did."

He added: "We've been working hard and the lads have responded to what me and John Gorman have been asking them to do.

"In this game a few of them didn't perform and let themselves down as well as the staff and the supporters who travelled a long way and go home disappointed."

Match report

Saints missed out on the chance of a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals as they were dumped out in the fifth round by League One Bristol Rovers.

In a game of few chances on a tricky pitch at the Memorial Stadium a deflected free kick six minutes from time proved the difference between the teams.

For caretaker bosses John Gorman and Jason Dodd it continued a dismal run which has seen Saints slip towards the Championship drop zone and now get knocked out of the FA Cup when it seemed there was a terrific chance to make the last eight.

It was obvious from the start that though the dry weather had prevented the pitch from being a mud bath as many had predicted it was extremely bobbly making it hard for passing.

Rovers had the first chance of the game on seven minutes when Stuart Campbell picked up the ball on the edge of the area and tried a half volley that looped just wide.

Saints had the lion's share of possession in the opening stages of the game and were doing a good job of pinning Rovers back and quietening the crowd while the home side looked a little nervy on their big day.

Stern John got the first Saints effort on target with a sharply taken half volley from just inside the right touchline but it went straight to Steve Phillips in the Rovers goal.

But the first good opening of the match fell to Rovers on 15 minutes.

Saints allowed a long throw to bounce right across into the middle of the area where Craig Disley met it but fired just wide of the far post.

It was Craig Hinton who had the next opening putting a low corner wide of the near post of Kelvin Davis.

After a scrappy period of play Rovers managed to win a couple of corners and caused a scare from the second one where Darren Powell just had to hack it clear as it bobbled around in the area.

Rovers were playing a fairly direct game but on the whole the Saints defence was handling it pretty well although it was never certain for backpasses to Davis with the ball bouncing all over the place on the tricky surface.

The way the game was going it looked like if a chance were to come it would either be Saints carving Rovers open with a good piece of play or Rovers getting a lucky bounce, converting a set-piece or firing in second ball from the edge of the area.

There was a half opening for Rickie Lambert on 34 minutes when he couldn't quite reach a ball in the box.

But the same man got a terrific chance a minute later when Andrew Davies couldn't control the ball and Lambert stole in behind. It was a fairly tight angle on the right but Davis did well to get out quickly and save at his feet.

Saints won a free kick in a decent position 25 yards out to the left of centre but Inigo Idiakez put it over the bar.

That proved to be the last chance of the half and it meant the game went into the second period goalless.

The match continued in much the same way as it had ended before the break.

It was looking unlikely there would be a glut of chances for either side with Saints probing for an opening and Rovers trying to force one.

Jhon Viafara became the first player in the book on 52 minutes for a foul on Campbell. He then had to be warned again after continuing to protest afterwards.

From the low free kick Lambert had a yard to get a shot away in the area but dragged it well wide of the near post.

Andy Williams threatened to break through on 56 minutes but Davis was out quickly to clear up the danger.

Saints made their first change two minutes later with Bradley Wright-Phillips coming on for Idiakez as Saints went with a three man attack.

John hit a quick half volley from 20 yards on the turn but fell back and it went over the bar.

Saints had their first real chance of the game on 64 minutes. Phillips came for a cross and only punched to the edge of the area where Jason Euell fired in a low volley but the Rovers keeper got down to save with his feet before Viafara lashed the rebound well over the bar.

Rovers thought they had taken the lead on 70 minutes when Lambert headed home Campbell's corner but referee Mike Riley had blown his whistle for a foul.

From set-pieces Rovers were looking dangerous and again it was Lambert who caused a problem on 76 minutes with a flicked header from Campbell's left wing free kick that flashed just over the bar.

Rovers made a first change with Sean Rigg on for Andy Williams.

Saints responded with a switch of their own with ten minutes remaining David McGoldrick replacing Marek Saganowski.

But with six minutes left Rover got a large slice of luck and the lead.

Saints conceded a free kick just outside their penalty area left of centre.

Lambert step up and fired it low into the area where it hit the leg of Jermaine Wright and deflected towards goal leaving Davis and Andrew Surman on the line with no chance.

Saints had a last throw of the dice with three minutes remaining with Adam Hammill replacing Viafara.

It was a case of Rovers trying to run the clock down and defending with their lives as Saints poured everything forward.

The fourth official held up the board to show three minutes of injury time and Saints knew what they had to do.

Saints won a corner which Davis came up for but Euell headed wide.

But that was it for Saints as when the final whistle went they headed out of the FA Cup having missed out on a great chance to reach the quarter-finals.

Saints were hopeless - we couldn't control or pass the ball at all and Rovers took a well deserved result. Our best players? Ostlund and Davis. We may have done better if Euell had been taken off instead of Idiakes. Come on Saints - get a grip!

Another dire display by a dire team.

The majority of posters on here are not football experts but week after week the names of Euell and Wright are mentioned as being out of their league. This was again the case today (although not one player stood out for me).

Gutless, effortless and pointless.

THE BEST TEAM WON! ONLY ONE TEAM IN IT!
For the UNBIASED observer, as I, a Pompey supporter (supporting the only Premier League Team on the South Coast) am, I would have thought that Bristol Rovers were the team that were in the higher division.
They controlled the game in the first half, and did not concede a corner until the second minute of the second half.
THEY WERE MAGNIFICENT!

Have you ever seen a more gutless, insipid and utterly useless team in your life?

I am so embarrassed to be following Saints right now. Those players need a good hiding. If anyone sees them out and about in town tonight, give them a slap. They deserve it.

This club is rotton from top to bottom. It has terminal cancer and is dying fast.

Not because we have been beaten by a pub team but because with the exception of Andrew Davies, there was not a single player on the pitch today that looked like they wanted to play for SFC let alone win a football match!!

I will make my normal journey from Northampton for the Plymouth game on Tuesday spending £33 on petrol and if the players turn in another performance like that, I will write to the club and ask for my money back!!

Oh and PLEASE don't give us the normal load of S**T that comes after a match these days!! We were very very very poor today and I just hope that someone comes out and says that because if they don't I will seriously question the integrity of all at SFC!

What a bunch of sugar plum fairies. Is Burley still picking this side, it seems he is, why did Hamill only get a few minutes. We are still playing useless Euell and haven't got a clue Jermain Wright. Saganowski was a disaster up front. I suppose we can blame the referee as he wasn't much better. I stick by what I said last week we are doomed to relegation I cannot see how we are going to get another result this season with this useless bunch. Most of these players need to be sold, their ball control, passing and vision are awful. There was no pride or passion in the shirt today what-so-ever.The Spirit of Southampton,I'm sad to say,is at an all time low.We lack leadership from the Board down to the pitch. It's time for the current owners to do whats best for the club, sell it, to someone who wants better things for Southampton FC.
Take nothing away from Bristol Rovers, they deserved the win, well done and hope they get a decent draw in the next round.

Yes, in our hearts of hearts we didn't think we'd win today...but we didn't even put up a fight! We seem to recall Wright being boo'd off a number of months ago when he was played at left back and now we've seen him creep back into this position with his mistakes costing us valuable points and now our cup place! What does he have to do to get dropped...along with Jason Euell? By all means it's certainly not only these two offenders that have got us wher we are but we are lost for words on how bad we're playing. The same things has been said week after week from us PAYING fans but nobody listens to us! We have no leader on or off the pitch and this needs to be sorted NOW! Who exactly are the players playing to impress now they know that there's no manager to be appointed in the near future? THE BOARD NEED TO LISTEN AND ACT NOW!! And if we hear one more Saints player, coach, tea-lady say that we're going to get into the playoffs we will be forced to send in the men in white coats as they are clearly insane!!

We were outplayed, out fought out thought and I'm sorry to say deserved to lose.We will be playing more League 1 sides next season unless something is done soon. The Manager's situation needs sorted now. The players are in comfort land with John Gorman and Jason Dodd. Unless a proper Manager is appointed soon then we are going to struggle to stay up. The Plymouth game is absolutely crucial now. Come on Board act now. Get a strong Manager in quickly. This Club has been let down by its Directors in recent years so come on Mr Crouch and co do what you're supposed to do and get this Club moving again. Some players are clearly overweight, there was zero passion, no desire, no guts, no commitment and the overall display was simply pityful. 5 years ago I couldn't of been a more prouder supporter, I know were going through tough times at the moment but just how much more crap do the fans have to take? Crouch must act now and get in an experienced manager to get us out of this mess otherwise relegation to League 1 will become an unthinkable reality. I feel sorry for fans who pay hard earned cash to witness the sort of pathetic football we played today, money up for grabs against a lower league side and we blew it. This team is awful, the whole set up at St Marys is diabolical and must be sorted out. I am sick together of all the takeover **** springing up and nothing ever happens, sort it or we are doomed! Abysmal absolute awful credit to Bristol Rover they deserved to win today,

I understand that the pitch wasn't in the best of conditions but was it me or do Saints look lost completely?

Way to many defensive mistakes and cases of given the ball away to easily , shakey deffending against set pieces.

Jason Euell cannot deffend or play midfield as for Powell again to many mistakes and sloppy deffending.

As for the Midfield Surman seems to be the only player in our team with some drive and creativity when Bradders came on we showed some more enthusiasm.

Why wasn't Bradders played at the start? the same with that new livepool bloke on loan

lol Hamilton is it? when the commentator said here comes Hamilton he's on loan from liverpool very dynamic , creative midfielder

I was thinking why the f**k didn't he make the starting 11 then lol

Ahwell we need a new manager and confidence instilled into this club ASAP before we end up in League 1

We were unlucky to lose today. We were reduced to the level of Rovers because of a very uneven pitch, yet we still had twice as many shots on goal as them. One delected shot won them the game - the luck wasn't with us. No disgrace and we can now concentrate on moving up the League. Our run of luck is due to come, and if it does we'll be soon challenging for the play-offs. We supporters have been spoilt for decades and now it's our chance to support the team - don't give up, have faith in Saints.

t, i could go on)it pains me to say it but i think we will be lucky to stay up!!something needs to be done...and very quickly, hopefully starting with sending wright to the under 16s to show him how to play football!i feel sorry for the fans that went to bristol.we need to start some sort of protest ouitside or in st marys because im sick of seeing the club i love go down the swanny through miss managment at all levels and extremely poor performances from players earning too much money for their meagre abilities,it stinks worse than a skate!!(again thats saying something)

Tell me for God's sake - you keep saying the Board should appoint someone. But who?!?

I'm afraid under the current circumstances no one wants the job. Ince - I don't really want him - but he's a popular choice. But, think about it. Why would he want the Saints job? He's not the brightest spark, but why shouldn't he wait for something better? When one of the top Championship teams inevitably loses their manager to a Premiership team, that's when Ince will leave his current club.

Name me a top manager that would want the Saints job?!? I wouldn't want the Saints job and I'm just a lowly white collar worker. No money to spend, a crap squad. Doomed to failure. It's a club on a downward spiral. You'd have to be a nutter to take the job. No one any good wants it.

Besides, after 4 or 5 bad performances, everyone'll be calling for his head anyway!

This is the lowest the club has been, I'm gutted it has come to this. The only hope is investment. If that comes, there's a good chance for the future of the club. If not, SFC RIP.

Well, we have to give it to you Simon...at you're optimistic but its time for all of us to start worrying now or you'll have no club to support. Think about it, getting relagated the first time was hard enough but now there is an realistic chance it could happen again. We're not being alarmistic just facing the facts. We have no manager,no money, no passion in the players and a board that lead us to put our faith in them and now aren't putting their faith in us...we deserve more than this! And why shoud we be calling for managers such as Dowie? Sacked twice in the past 14 months? Why aim so low all the time? I know money is tight but surely paying out for a manager that can get results will generate more money for the club than getting someone on the cheap to not improve what we already have?! We once were a big club that any manager would have liked to have been involved with but times are certainly are certainly changing at St Marys!!

It's all very well people slagging off the "management", but once the whistle blows it is just a case of 11 professionals playing as a team. By this I mean playing to the strengths of the guys with the same coloured shirt and using your own personal skill and ability to put your team into a positive situation from where a goal can be scored. It is a simple enough game after all and if you have the ball the other team cannot score!

I don't think a Saints player won a single tackle, was first to a 50/50 ball, chased or harried. There was hardly 2 passes strung together throughout the 90 minutes, it was a truely appalling display by what appear to be a bunch of 2nd. rate players with no direction, purpose or understanding of either the game of football or their team mates. We play better away from home than at home because of the awful pitch.... and we take more fans to away games. We have already played and beaten a low Premiership team (albeit on penalties) Fulham, but we did outplay them (on the ground) in both games. We play football and are not a hoof pub team, like so may others in Div 1. Teams like Leeds and Forest are down here on performance and nothing else, nobody has a given right to be in the Premiership or Championship, you just have to look at the performance of our neighbours (just promoted from Div 1!) to see that.

Anyway we will have a new ground and playing surface over the next year or so, so this should help our push towards the Championship.

Fellow sufferers,

Having just witnessed - live on Tv here - further humiliation in the bright Bristolian winter sunshine (and thank goodness Bristol is at least a Wessex port city), I will accept any offers in a pre-paid postage envelope for my 2615 Southampton Lesisure Holdings share certificates before I consign (should I say "relegate") them to use as domestic toilet paper to match our so-called "heroes" pathetically insipid performance.

Before I read any managerial explanations for today's result - and this was the 1st time I'd seen "Saints" in action since the gut-wrenching televised 15 May 2nd play-off semi-final away @ Derby County (when I made the mistake of awakeing Mary well before dawn here to watch the penalty shoot-out) - I would dearly love to serve immediate termination-of-emplo
yment notices on Monday morning to at least Wright, Viafara & Euell for each of whom the role of a donkey in some sub-Saharan nation might offer a new & more-useful lease-of-life; a few others in today's line-up (such as Wright-Phillips as a late substitute) also came close to qualifying (but not Davis - the often-maligned goalkeeper - for whom I have some sympathy).

Well done Bristol Rovers - you deserved to win.

For "Saints" - and since I've nothing other than just a tenuous nostalgic link with Vectis now - avoiding relegation (& following AFC Bournemouth into either administration or menstruation) must surely be this season's prioirty. Having hitherto supported the concept of Dodd & Gorman being retained as joint caretaker managers pending an official successor to Burley being appointed,
my resolve got weakened by what I've just watched. Bristol Rovers' coach (Trollope) was on his feet most of the time exhorting & encouraging his players; the lack of Tv coverage of the "Saints" bench suggested that they'd either fallen asleep, or at least (& inevitably) short of ideas...

despondent Dennis

I thought defensively we were pretty sound in general and battled quite well. The ball is constantly coming back on to our defenders because THE MIDFIELD CAN'T KEEP POSSESSION - this is where the REAL problem lies. The players are too eager to get rid of the ball and also there are few options for the passer because nobdy wants the ball - partly due to lack of confidence. On the ball the players need CALM & COMPOSURE (shouting at them will not help). Off the ball - YES Shouting will help them close down the opposition. Until we regain the composure in possession and also show for the ball more - the defence is under too much pressure. What comes first...confidence or composure??

I just cant see what a new manager can do the team is not good enough.

It was the same when we went down we replaced Wigley with Redknapp and we did even worse.

A Manager needs time to acquire players and practice tactics you could get anyone to go in and shout at the players but they are not interested if we got promoted most would be moved on because they are not Premiership Class.

This decline because we have not replaced Bale or Baird effectively .Davies is good but is really replacing Lundekvam.

The team just has no confidence giving the ball away and playing with little width.

The squad is full of players who arent good enough in this division or resilent enough to deal with an away tie at Bristol Rovers. Thats Burleys fault for putting his faith in players that havent delivered the goods for this club.

first off congratulations to bristol rovers on a well deserved victory. the goal was a touch on the side but no one can argue that they didnt deserve it. southampton were a complete and utter disgrace. an embbarrassment to themselves, the fans, the club and the city! they deserved everything they got. i thought kelvin davis, andrew davies and alexander ostlund did ok but everyone else had a shocker!!! we had 1 shot on target all game and created nothing else. SHOCKING!!
i know we've got no money, no real chairman, no manager and the future is a little unclear but thats NO EXCUSE for what happened on that pitch today.
what i saw was no pride, no passion, no commitment to the cause and we as fans DEMAND that as the absolute minimum from our team. on top of that there was no quality, no organization or leadership from anyone on that pitch. if we play like that again in the league next week the score will be alot worse than one nil!!
the cold hard reality is that this is southampton football clubs darkest hour since the club began! and yes off the field things arent clear, but yes with the proper investment and a good manager the future is bright but unless THE PLAYERS on the pitch perform well the only future for saints is in league one!
we are only 6 points off relegation with over a dozen games to go. we ARE in a relegation scrap now and the players need to show some pride and guts and ability and get this great club out of the position that it is in.
as a fan i've always tried to be positive about my team but todays performance has left me with nothing good to say about the team, they were disgraceful and should be ashamed of themselves and realise that they are not worthy of wearing our colours. i will not accept seeing another performance like that.

Dont blamne Crouch. If you want to point the finger, look no further than Lowe. Hes the person that sent out club into decline by making the wrong decisions and sending out club into a decline. We cannot afford to appoint a new manager yet so its a case of wait and see if we get new investment. If we do, we can afford to appoint a top manager, but at the moment, we cant. The squad is full of players who arent good enough in this division or resilent enough to deal with an away tie at Bristol Rovers. Thats Burleys fault for putting his faith in players that havent delivered the goods for this club. The reality is, this is a fine mess that will take a while to sort out. The playing staff will need a total overhaul, investment or not so fans will have to grin and bear with it whilst things develop, as painful as it is.

Only A.Davies and John can be pleased with the effort today. Powell, Euell and Wright are useless they shouldnt wear a saints shirts. Knew it would be tough today, we never looked like winning.

Anyone know why we left it till 5 minutes or so to bring on Hammill. Making the same lame manergerial selections as Burley.

I thought this was supposed to be the 'southampton daily echo' website, not 'the news'? Instesd of posting pointless comments who no-one is interested in reading, why dont you post somthing on your own website? Funny how the pompey fans are now having a lot to say after spending so many years in our shadow. Laugh it up, we'll be back to show you who the number one team in the south is.
Correct! It is the 'Southampton Daily Echo' website and not 'The News'!
10/10 for observation!
If no-one is ingterested, how come you, understandably 'fed up saint' have read what I have written? A contradiction!
Why don't I post something on my own website?
As you said, this is the Southampton Daily Echo site - not YOUR site and not MY site, but OUR site. The Echo does not confine comments on here to residents in the SO area, or to SMS customers, but allows ALL comments!
Funny how Pompey fans are now having a lot to say after spending so many years in 'our shadow'!
I can't say that Pompey were ever in your shadow, although things did look black down here for years. Of course, I guess that you and your colleagues were full of sympathy, and reached for the Kleenex every time Pompey lost, and prayed that we would be back in the top division soon!!! You and your buddies slung the 'brown and smelly' for all you were worth (which in today's market is not very much!) and now the roles are reversed!
What goes round, comes around, and now it has come around for Pompey, we are enjoying it!
With regard the last sentence, I don't think that I, or anyone else supporting THE SOUTH COAST'S ONLY PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM need you, or anyone else wearing red and white stripes, to tell us which team is the No1 team in the south!

Just to add further comment to my earlier message today.

I was comparing the apparent fitness of the Bristol Rovers squad with our half-hearted bunch (especially in that disatrous 2nd half).

What is the training programme @ Staplewood on weekdays? I suggest that it might be just...

a) a milk-soaked Weetabix for breakfast, followed by...

b) a gentle hangover-dissipating jog around the perimeter of the training pitch, followed by...

c) a dash to Bugle Street to file the next sternum-thumping message about how the squad is totally-united in the dressing-room & fully-committed (despite the deficit of just a few Coca-Cola Championship points) to still achieving a play-off place this season...

Dream on - I guess the rush to buy season-tickets for the 2008-2009 campaign will hardly displace the helmet nor agitate the armpit sweat-glands of the solitary policeman who might get allocated to control the crowd of fervent purchasers @ Northam next time...

It was much, much worse under Lowe (I better point out that was ironic because you probably won't understand). He made one crucial error, which giving into the fans and not reappointing Glen Hoddle.
And the fans have had their way ever since, getting real Saints supporters to run our club - what a raging success that has been.

Today was the worst performance I have seen from a Southampton team since I have supported them, thats from 1990. We played worse today than we ever played under Ian Branfoot and they were bad times! Things need sorting at the top first starting with the board, we need a football board and nothing else. The sooner the Plc board are gone the better. No-one will want to buy this club at this stage because of the prospect of us going down when they will be able to buy us for less in a lower division! There is no passion or fight shown by the players but what can you expect with all that is happening higher in the club. We are an attractive prospect and have the foundations there for any potential buyer to build on but this will not happen this season when it looks as though they will get us for less in the summer. The sooner things are sorted out the better but it would seem we have to put up with these performances until the end of the season when it may be too late!

We have a spineless outfit of mediocre players who care little and show it

We are currently playing in exactly the same disjointed an passionless manner as under GB. We even keep on making similar bizarre selections.
It is obvious we desperately need new ideas quick, we have 2 crucial fixtures in a week and at the moment you could not see us beating anyone. Even the BBC were staggered as to how bad we were, I wanted to ring up and say this is normal!!

Our run of luck is due to come, and if it does we'll be soon challenging for the play-offs. It is a simple enough game after all and if you have the ball the other team cannot score!
Yes but it is the management who is supposed to teach them to control the ball, teach them to pass the ball not hoof it everytime it comes near them, teach them to look out for each other and teach them a pattern that should cope with and beat the opposition. It is the management who should pick the right team and the management who should be able to make decisions during the game to cope with the oppositions tack ticks. If the players don't have a clue as to what to do then all the skills in the world will not compensate. it is the managements fault from top to bottom they got the players into the club! None of us can support this rubbish anymore I have been a supporter through thick and thin for 54 years but I have never seen anything like this.

(Not the one in Friday the 13th ) This was the day to play with flair and expression and then i saw Euell and Wright were playing! Not Lallana who has a lovely touch or Licca who has a point to prove. Viafara on the right wing! He is man for the centre of midfield but even he has underperformed this year along with some many others.I along with millions of others saw fear on those players faces today as if they knew they were going to lose right from the off. The younger players have no fear (remember Theo) and now is the time to bring them in for the final battle in the next two months.McGoldrick/La

Today saints were not at the races today, they were second to every ball, no passion or commitment shown by many of the players, they were not able to pass or even manage a decent shot that i can think of. Why dodd and gorman persist with Euell and Wright is beond me its like burly is still here and tells them what to do. Its fine to say that we were showing sings of good play but saying does not make you win football games you have to pysically do them on the pitch to win. Saints concede a goal and then start to play WHY? can't they play a game of football from the start and have the drive to win from the start example stoke 3-0 down then showed they could play by getting the 2 goals why not do this from the start?
How much longer can this go on for?
As the league 1 trap door gets closer its quite clear and no disrespect to them but dodd and gorman are not fit for the managers job here, A lucky win aginst bury a draw at palace and the rest defeats no where near good enough for promotion to the prem, which afterall was the aim at the start of the season. The board need to act and get a new maager and fast befor it all to late.
It needs to be addressed sooner rather than later there are plenty of good managers out there at this time why can't they see this a go get one of them? Ian Dowie, Micky Adams and Glenn Hoddle to name a few they may not be perfect for the job but all of them would get the team going. I have supported saints all my life and this is the worst time that i can remember and if this mess does not get sorted out soon then i am sorry but it will only get worse. SORT IT OUT LADS!!!!!

Once a Saint always a Saint, I've been a fan since I was nine years old and we were,in thodse days, bundled into a top pen at the Milton end for 6 pence a game. We marvelled at the likes of Terry Paine, Clive Huxford and John Sydenham playing in the third division (south). I was there at Wembley in 76 and I always visit St Marys when I come home. In Fifty years of following our team, I can honestly say this was the most lack lustre performance I have ever witnessed. Its not just the spineless money grabbing players who are bad, its the "temps" who call themselves coaches, and the directors who will be selling off what little good there is left at the end of the season to enable themselves a tidy bonus on their "investment. We are now in desperate trouble. I have said before that this Saints teamm is the worst I've seen in more than 50 years as a supporter. Who can tell me I'm wrong? It's Burley's team and what dross he has brought to St Mary's - almost criminal!

In some ways I feel sorry for Doddy and Gorman - they inherited this bunch of gutless players (only Davis and Davies excepted). On the other hand it's their job to motivate the team and they are clearly out of their depth.

To start with Euell and Idiakez in central midfield was tantamount to surrender before the game even began. The middle four should have been Hamill and Surman on the flanks and Viafara and the tea lady in the centre. Leaving Hamill on the bench and then to bring him on so late was crass stupidity.

The directors now have absolutely no choice but to bring in another manager, at least to the end of the season.

The Club must also find the money to pay the wages of some decent loan players, because the current squad will relegate us.

I have no confidence in our getting the point a game we need to be sure of staying up.

If there is no improvement on Tuesday, the fans must vent their feelings at the match. This may seem disloyal and unsupportive but sometimes the fans have to make very clear their dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in order to force the management into action.

We are in serious danger of relegation to Division 1 (back to Div 3 South days - which, to be fair, is where the Club was when I first watched them play!). That will hasten the demise of the Club - who will invest serious money in a club 2 giant steps away from the premiership?

Lowe (and for that matter, Crouch, Wilde and Corbett), just realise that your investment will go the way of Northern Rock.

So let's turn up in strength on Tuesday, give the team our backing from the kick-off, but let's be prepared to voice our protests if we are again let down by the players.

Give them one last chance.

You must be about the same age as me! See my previous post a short while ago. I started in the 'chocolate box' at the Milton Road end.

At least, as you say, in those Div 3 South days we had players with skill and bottle. Where are the Terry Paines, John Sydenhams, Cliff Huxfords, Derek Reeveses, George O'Briens, George Kirbys et al who worked their socks off as professional footballers and entertained us.

Today we have to suffer overpaid prima donnas who are no more than mercenaries with no love or commitment to the Club.

I really dont know why the players bothered turning out. They would have been better announcing that they could not be bothered to play and settle for a 1-0 loss instead of going out on the pitch. They were never in it. Never showed any want to win. A complete shambles and utter disgrace to anyone concerned with our beloved club. It was so discouraging watching them. No control of the ball, no creativity and the passing was beyond poor.
This is my report on each player as i see it:
DAVIS:5- Probably one of the better players on the pitch today. Made a few good catches. Not at fault for the goal. Not assertive enough and there is a clear lack of communication between him and the back line.
WRIGHT:2- Did nothing. Just well not been there. Lacks pace and imagination. Cracking own goal, the t*at. Thats our second in a week isnt it?
POWELL:3- Cant believe he was the captain. He obviously has no leadership qualities. Never looked comfortable.
DAVIES:5-The only player who actually looked committed to the cause and possibly deserves his weeks wage. Strong tackler and reasonable in the air.
OSTLUND:4-Made some good clearances and some assertive runs forward. Not the best passer of the ball and committed himself to too many challenges.
SURMAN:4-Looked short of ideas, but still probably the best man in midfield.
EUELL:1-FECKING useless. Could not find a team mate with a pass. Gave the ball away countless times. Did not look committed and looked like a flid in a tackle. The only positive thing about him was the volley/shot. Our only shot other than JOHN's volley thats worth mentioning. Why was he not taken off?
IDIAKEZ:2-Just well not been on pitch either. Not committed, no link up with strikers and gave away possession.
VIAFARA:2-Did nothing, not committed. Poor tackle for booking.
JOHN:3-I think he tried, but had no support from midfield or saga
SAGA:0-Now i know why Troyes let him go. 14 games without a goal. No effort from him. A disgrace and i would not pay him a penny this week if i had it my way! Doing his religious piece when he came off. Was that an apology to god for robbing us blind????
BWP:2-had a bit of link up play with JOHN, but apart from that useless.
HAMILL:2-Brought on far too late. Dont know why he did not start the game.
DODD/GORMAN:1-Not right for this club. Still choosing the same players and playing them in the wrong position like burley. We wont move forward with them at the helm. Good luck with the relegation battle. At this rate we are unlikely to win another game.

Im off to drown myself in my beer!! Loosing all hope...............

The miserable untalented bunch of players that now wear the red & white stripes, embarrass everything that Southampton FC used to stand for. We the fans have stood by and watched the club ripped to pieces by people who try to tell us they care. I would love to think someone at the club having watched todays diobolical shambles would for once make some sensible decisions like getting a bloody manager !! but lets face it, no one in the boardroom cares, or has the guts to turn this farce around and as the passion is sucked away from the fans who inevitably turn their back on the team the club stumble on to financial disaster. If even they can see it isn't working with Wright at LB, why can't our management team?

Respect to Rovers you played football on a poor pitch, well done!
Doddy & Gormmy why did you not take the pitch into consideration when picking the team instead of telling the players how bad the pitch was after picking the wrong team.
Today was a day for moving the ball early and stretching the game with pace.
We had no width without Hammill, both Viafara and Surman getting sucked in making us too narrow. I find it hard to believe some of you guys were saying Ostlund had a good game as he certainly did not. Both he and the left back, Wright, should push on (if you play a holding midfield player), this did not happen. We can excuse Wright as he is not a full back. You may not like it but Wright is a better holding midfield player than anyone we have bar Safri. Stern John is overweight and not fit enough, Saga needs games, Wright Phillips is not quite there yet & McGoldrick needs a chance to show what he can offer.
Its baltantly obvious that the time is right to look outside the players that have been comfortable in their mediocrity, to the reserves where we have, hopefully youth and hunger and maybe even the youth team for a left back.

I have been a Saints fan for several years and I watched in disbelief the shambles on the television this afternoon. Where was the passion, where were the players proud to be wearing the red and white? Long long gone methinks. We used to ridicule the likes of Franny Benali, but at least he and his team mates were Southampton through and through and fought to the bitter end. I am sure that the assembled united nations we have on the pitch at the moment hadn't heard of Southampton until they were coersed into playing for us, their only concern seems to be picking up their wage packet at the end of the week. If I went to work and turned in a performance like they did this afternoon, and come to that, have been through most of this season, I would be getting my P45. Can we not sue them for impersonating footballers, or claiming wages under false pretences. We have Jason Dodd and John Gorman in charge at the moment, a position foisted on them by the present shambolic board we have, I am sure as a cheap option, they were already there so it was another large wage we didn't have to find, take the easy option. We need a change at the helm, then work down through a decent manager and, if we can find anyone who actually wants to play for us, get a decent team together before we sink into oblivion. I am convinced we are staring a division one football next season, we will just have to take a deep breath, hope we get some decent input of finance and start all over again. I will always be a Saints fan, but I will NOT go through the turnstiles at St Marys again until we start playing football again and I have a team who I'm proud to support.

This is so frustrating as we know the team must be knackered, we know they can play so much better. The problem is now morale is lower it is even more difficult for the team to function as a unit.

It is obvious that Messrs Dodd and Gorman do not have the leadership ability to drag this team to an acceptable level of performance. As such Mr. Crouch stop hiding behind the possibility of a takeover and appoint a manager this week. Waiting is not an option and there are viable candidates out there available now. I wholeheartedly agree that it is the players who deliver (or not) but a manager with savvy and character is a key component of any successful team. I really think that today’s performance was that bad that the players should personally make a financial gesture to the supporters that travelled to the game.

The person in front of me had his wife and two children with him...it must have cost him an arm and a leg to watch those obscenely overpaid jokers run around making idiots of themselves.

Fair play to Bristol they stuck to their task. They where not effected by a dodgy pitch, spread the play well, and created chances.

Fair play to Andrew and Kelvin they did all that you can ask for a keeper and a central defender.

The rest of the team could not even do the basics right. On the rare occasions we put the ball in the channel they struggled. Why did we keep cutting in and trying to deliver crosses from 15yrds!

If those that travelled to Bristol did not do their job they would not have one for long. If you paid to have a wall built and it was 10% ok you wouldn’t expect the foreman to make a lame excuse and leave it at that.

With regards to Jason Euall I have no idea who he is attempting to delude that he is a professional footballer. We would have seen more honest endeavour from Ali Dia. Euall made the rest of the players seem like total football and Bristol look like Brazil

And Please, Please, Please echo tell it like is for once. You are a newspaper not a smoke screen to disguise the inept management of our football club.

What has happened to the club I have supported all my life? When I was a teenager I dreamt of nothing more than being a professional footballer for Saints and and one stage got close, 25 years on I still have desire to pull on shirt for the Saints and get stuck in through Centre Midfield but obviously I can't. To sit and watch, time after time, no teamwork, no passion, no desire and no vision is so so sad.

Give Andrew Davies the Captain's armband, he leads by example.

Give David McGoldrick a run of games. People say he does nothing when he comes on, but how can I striker get involved when the team is not capable of supplying any service to him and why play him at right-wing/right-fie

ld. I am sure if we gave McGoldrick as much opportunity as Wright-Phillips he would come good. The same goes for Lallana, I say drop Surman and play Lallana instead, he seems an inventive player and can be no weaker than Surman surely. What Lloyd James and Oliver Lancashire. Chuck these boys in now and give the work shy layabouts that currently line our 1st team squad garden leave.

Will we bottle again with Plymouth? They are scrapping for points as well and will bring good support, I fear it's gonna be another QPR!

Our midfield display was disgaceful. Can't somone get it into Diddy and Gormless' thick heads that Jason Euell is the biggest waste of space on the planet. Closely followed by Jermaine bloody Wright (have these two got a clause in their contract saying ' must be picked even though I'm useless'?)

And then just as Indiakez was starting to get into the game and finally making us threaten their goal, he got substituted !!! While Euell remained on the pitch !!!

Gormless and Diddy must go NOW.

WE need a manager who the players will fear. One who will get those overweight overpaid talentless time wasters fit (with the exception of Andrew Davies - oh, and Kelvin Davis - never thought I'd say that).

We (Saints) were really poor today and I guess that maybe I was a bit harsh calling BR a pub team but most people would agree that whilst you thoroughly deserved your win, You would not get past a quality side on that performance today! Not sour grapes just fact. Still we will probably get a chance to avenge that defeat next season when we are relegated.

You never know we may pass you at the end of this season..... Good luck anyway.
Yeah we WILL probably pass! Hope you get a good draw in the quarters......If Barnsley can beat liverpool, you never know!?

We marvelled at the likes of Terry Paine, Clive Huxford and John Sydenham playing in the third division (south). I was there at Wembley in 76 and I always visit St Marys when I come home. In Fifty years of following our team, I can honestly say this was the most lack lustre performance I have ever witnessed. Its not just the spineless money grabbing players who are bad, its the \"temps\" who call themselves coaches, and the directors who will be selling off what little good there is left at the end of the season to enable themselves a tidy bonus on their \"investment. Just to add salt to my wounds, I\'ve retired to the Dordogne and my nearest neighbour is a Portsmouth season ticket holder !!!!
You must be about the same age as me! See my previous post a short while ago. I started in the \'chocolate box\' at the Milton Road end. At least, as you say, in those Div 3 South days we had players with skill and bottle. Where are the Terry Paines, John Sydenhams, Cliff Huxfords, Derek Reeveses, George O\'Briens, George Kirbys et al who worked their socks off as professional footballers and entertained us. Today we have to suffer overpaid prima donnas who are no more than mercenaries with no love or commitment to the Club. Why should we go on giving them our hard earned money?
I must also be about the same age. One thing to remember is that when we were in Div 3 South we had board members and a manager who'd played for the Saints. In '63 I think it was, George Reader became chairman - the ex-Saint who'd reffed the 1950 World Cup Final so there were "football/Saints" men at the very top of the Club.
No-one there now seems to have any interest in the Club's history or respect for the fans or themselves as long as the money keeps rolling in. Just boycott the games - an empty ground might be the only way for them to get the message. Nothing else has worked so far has it?
