Saints 0 Plymouth 2 - dismal start for new boss Nigel

Nigel Pearson's reign as Saints boss got off to a dreadful start as first-half goals from Peter Halmosi and James Paterson gave Plymouth a convincing win in the Championship at St Mary's.

Despite starting brightly, Saints went behind after 31 minutes when Lilian Nalis played in Halmosi, who clipped the ball past Kelvin Davis.

Things went from bad to worse two minutes later when Paterson curled home an excellent long-range effort for his first Plymouth goal since joining the club from Motherwell.

Saints remain six points clear of the relegation zone after their third successive league defeat, but the teams below them apart from Leicester and Scunthorpe now have at least one game in hand - Coventry have two.

It was Saints' eighth home loss this season in the league.

Pearson made three changes to the side beaten by Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup, with Wayne Thomas coming in at the back for the injured Alex Ostlund, while Gregory Vignal and Bradley Wright-Phillips replaced Jhon Viafara and Inigo Idiakez.

On-loan defender Russell Anderson made his Plymouth debut a matter of hours after his move from Sunderland, while fellow new boy Gary Teale had to make do with a place on the bench.

Saints started well and Vignal's deep cross from the left found Marek Saganowski at the far post, but he volleyed well wide.

The visitors came back and Andrew Davies did well to block Jermaine Easter's cross-cum-shot before the Saints defender headed wide at the other end.

Thomas also nodded over as Saints continued to press for the opener, but they suffered a blow after 22 minutes when injury-prone Darren Powell limped off and was replaced by Viafara.

The injury disrupted Saints' rhythm and they paid the ultimate price minutes later as Andrew Surman gave the ball away to Nalis, who slid it to Halmosi and the Hungarian slotted home his second goal in two away games.

Ex-Saints boss Paul Sturock's side almost doubled their lead immediate as Nalis played the ball into Halmosi again, but this time he shot wide.

However, the respite for Saints only lasted a matter of seconds when Paterson picked the ball up and stroked in a superb effort from 25 yards.

Saints estimated it was their lowest ever crowd for a league game at St Mary's and the disgruntled home fans voiced their concerns as Davis made a superb save to stop Easter making it 3-0 just before the break.

Saints came flying out the traps after the restart in search of a way back into the game and Saganowski headed over from a tight angle.

The home side continued to push forward and Saganowski set up Stern John, but his shot was deflected over.

The resulting corner was glanced on by Viafara into the path of Thomas, who blazed over from close range when he should have scored.

Minutes later, Davies headed straight at McCormick, before Saganowski fired wide from distance.

Saints were looking dangerous and Jermaine Wright's pass picked out John, but he dragged his shot from the edge of the box just wide.

However, Plymouth almost made the game safe soon after when Paul Connolly played in Steven MacLean, but his low shot was saved by Davis.

Second-half substitute Teale then played in Connolly, but once again Davis was alert to produce a fine smothering save.

Saints continued to press late on, but they ran out of steam as Plymouth held on for the win that took them within two points of the play-offs.

Saints, sadly, are looking very much over their shoulder at the teams behind them.

not a good start really. as much as i like to try to look on the brightside things dont look good at the moment for us unfortunately.quite the opposite in fact, things look set to get worse before they get better.
scunthorpe away this saturday is a massive game, simply put, its a must win! saints need to roll their sleeves up and battle and scrap for every point from now to the end of the season if we're gonna avoid the drop to league one!(and i never thought i'd say that).this is the sad reality that has happened to our club and we cant let that happen!another relegation would cripple the club permanently!!

Truly, truly shocking YET AGAIN. I'm a Season Ticket holder but didn't go tonight, and I feel really sorry for the poor 16,000ish Saints fans that did go. Attendances WILL keep falling if the players don't at least make some attempt to look interested. By modern standards I doubt any of them are on the sort of money flying around in the Premiership, but they still earn more in a few months than most of us will in a year and for what?!?!?! If I "worked" as little as they did in my job I would be sacked on the spot, that is a fact. Disgraceful, disgusting, gutless, passionless bunch of overpaid *****. I hope you can all sleep at night in your luxury homes. Let's make no mistake now, we are 100% in a relagation battle and to survive you need guts and passion, something we sadly lack. I really fear for the future of MY football club.

This is an unbelievable slump- it's going to end in tears. We can't score, we cant defend. I,m not sure any manager can make much of difference unless some really useful loan players are brought in and what chance of that?

Absolute garbage and that was the players trying to prove a point after Saturday's debacle and also trying to impress the new manager !!!!!!!!!!!!!

They can't even raise themselves to even the levels of rubbish, they are way way worse than that. Only Davies escapes any blame, the rest of them are shocking.

If Jason Euell plays again for Saints, then this club is well and truly dead and buried.

Pearson has to learn immediately the players who got us into this mess are not the ones he can trust to get us out of it. That is just rewarding them for playing rubbish.

Play the kids. They will give their all, be fitter and faster than the current first team and the crowd will support them.

That was the worst atmosphere I have ever experienced at a football match, but you can't blame the fans, we are all sick and tired of watching such dross and watching players who just don't give a toss.

The crowd was also a lot less than published. Saints always include ST holders whether they turn up or not and there were loads of ST holders who normally sit near me who were not there tonight. I reckon it was nearer 15,000 and it will get smaller and smaller.

Who in their right mind would renew their season ticket right now to watch more of that dross??

We are going down with that "team". Utterly gutless and not deserving of any support.

What a load of sh*ite. This is all Crouch's fault, plus the previous board members.
What the hell are they up to?? Messing around with the club for the last few years and especially this season. And it's costing us dearly. But Crouch and co don't care. And that's rubbed off on the players who clearly don't care either.
I give up commenting on our club as our voices are never heard. We're in this mess coz that's what they want. They just want to make a mockery out of SFC and theyre succeeding. The Board are a bunch of useless idiots who should relieve themselves of the club NOW! As for the players, I'm not even going to start...

I was going to make the sizeable trip tonight to support the new manager but then I thought better of it. I'm glad I did!

It has got to the stage where the players need to make a gesture to the fans to get us back on board. Where was the passion tonight? Where was the positive response to the appointment of a new manager? Yet again a defeat to nil at home. That's 8 defeats isn't it?

Either we have a squad of terrible players (which I don't personally believe) or they have no respect for the new manager, or both!

Appalling stuff!

Very well put Pete. I could not agree more. Its the players who are to blame at present. I was utterly ashamed of my beloved team that i too have supported for over 20 years.
Its a whole host of things that have accumulated over the season though. The board selling our best players, Burley bringing in some shocking replacements and i have to say, even if we had a well known manager, they have feck all to work with and no money.
Reading the saints website, it stated PEARSON never watched the shocker at BR. A team was picked yesterday for todays game and he stuck with that. Im sure it was GORMAN/DODD that chose it.
I will stick with PEARSON and offer my support. At least give him some time to look at the team and see if he can work some magic!! Even better, get some more loanees!!! He certainly looks a much tougher breed than Burley and Co and his playing record supports that theory.
I really hope he can pull something out of the bag for saturday. I for one really would like to see Pearson do well. I give him respect for just taking on such a huge task in his first managerial test.

After watching this latest pile of rubbish the new manager hopefully will ship at least seven of the non tryers out of this club as soon as possible.
They are not fit to wear the shirt and they do not possess any passion.
We did not have a shot on goal and the only player in the Saints side that came the field with any creditability was our centre half Davies.

Gutted yet again. Nigel Pearson will no doubt take some flack by those looking for someone new to blame, but at the end of the day he hadn't been there long enough to pick a team, so obviously this was a pre-decision. At the end of the day it comes down to the 11 men put out on the pitch, they know what they are there for unfortunately they seem to have neither the inclination nor the know how to put together two passes, let alone play a complete game. If this sorry state of affairs continues then I am afraid we are heading for relegation, resulting in the subsequent demise of gates, therefore gate receipts, therefore funds making the situation even worse. We supposedly have no money now, relegation would make it even worse. Can anybody tell me what has happened to all the money gained from previous sales of our golden assets. There has to be some somewhere!! What oh what has happened to this once magnificent club who produced the likes of Shearer. Think over the years of the players we have sold and imagine what sort of a team we would have if we could turn back time and put them out on the pitch, the likes of Channon, Keegan, Shearer, Flowers, I could go on and on. We desperately need another le Tiss, perhaps if we all pray.........very hard............!!!!

Oh and you Pompey fans why don't you all f**ck right off. For the first time in how many years, your team are doing well and not in the old division 3, and you still can't help but pointlessly gloat! I've just come back from the PLymouth match.Plenty of endeavour but without any ideas.
Some years ago I remember working for a large national company .Rumour had it that we were about to be taken over.Nobody knew who would keep thier jobs.It was totally demotivating and affected the morale of the staff. That's how I see the Saints players at the moment. What a boost it would have been is say Ian Dowie or the like came in as manager.Of course there would still be the uncertainty.Tonight I was majorly upset at the way the fans first of all booed Jermanie Wright and then gave an almighty cheer when Jason Euell was taken off.
That will not help those players to improve or want to play for the club and at the moment we need all the help we can get. What we all need is a couple of good results.Sadly we will never get them the way we played tonight. We just run out of ideas. We started well but the first goal deflated us.And who can blame the lads since they must have had a gutful of being booed and written off.Jason Euell has the skill as he has proved himself in the premiership.Having said that I think he should be an attacking midfielder not a holding player.Give the lads a chance! As a season ticket holder and supporting Saints since 1953 I've seen many situations like this .We survived because we had what we called the Spirit of Southampton. For the benefit of the present Saints players this was not a meaningless phrase. Players would die for the club "with thier boots on".I was angry after tonight's display. Now I feel sad that may have to go through all heart "in the mouth stuff" we endured when we were relegated. And many a season before then when we weren't.But I say let's pull together and give this team some encouragement a shot in the arm. NO MORE BOOING PLAYERS GIVE NIGEL AND THE BOY'S SUPPORT.It was the supporters that helped us to defy gravity in the past at the end of each season and WE WILL DO IT AGAIN COME ON YOU REDS

1/ i doubt that pearson even picked the side for the game tonight as he has just arrived so really his first game in charge should be seen as Scunthorpe.

2/ players have lost all direction and confidence so booing them, especially picking on individuals, will only serve to push them further towards the bottom of the table.

3/ although i agree that wright and euell have been poor, wright always plays out of position and thus ends up being a scapegoat. i doubt that his confidence can improve when he's changing positions, ones that he's not even made for every five minutes. if you play players out of form then it just damages them further. i agree they shouldn't be in the side but they didn't lack effort as much as others did.

3/ i respect fans being annoyed at the team, as i am, but the only criticism should be directed at those who dont try or are lazy. so i was amazed that john escaped the fans wrath as he looked empty of desire and interest, shown by the amount of times he took too long to get back on-side and waiting for the ball. i know its about opinions but i was most upset by his effort levels tonight.

4/ shocked by pearson's appointment but lets get behind him and give him a fair and proper chance as i'm sure he'll be giving his all for us.

What an achievment, the quarter finals of the fa cup.
Seeing your team in an fa-cup final feels a lot better, still you will never have that pleasure in your life-time now will you.
I have.
Europe, do me a favour, you are a one man team, and he is on the verge of leaving for spurs.
You will be lucky to finnish in the top twelve, by the way you were brilliant against PNE, what with all that flair and attacking football,PMSL.
Yes do enjoy your trip to old-trafford,l am sure the pain that you will feel when they beat you will feel lovely.
And to think that you could have had a lovely home tie against all of those lower league teams.
Just think, you could have drawn bristol rovers at home, beating them, which would have guaranteed you not one but two trips to Wembley.
But the great thing is, that YOU AINT GOING TO WEMBLEY, and that must really HURT.
So it aint all bad is it happy chappy.
Dont go on about attendances.
You could only take about 300 to PNE for a 5th round match.
But the amateur club in the same city took 6000 in the 4th round, priceless.
Just as well you aint going to wembley really, giving your very minimal support, you would have shown the people of Hampshire up.

Until you lot got promoted 5 years ago, most Saints didn't realise you hated us so much. THe rivalry was to be honest a bit of a joke and a whole generation of Saints fans grew up not giving Pompey a second thought...

Having just moved back to Southampton after a couple of years in Southsea, I can safely say the rivalry may be growing in intensity in Southampton, but the pure hatred felt by Pompey fans towards us is something quite different that even now, most Saints fans don't fully comprehend.

NP will prove to be the first astute thing this board has done.

I am getting fed up with blame. The bottom line is we are rubbish now. Couldn't agree more about playing the kids. At least we would achieve something in getting them some experience.

What can we do about Euell and Wright? I hope that NP will see them for what they are. I am a little worried that they have a clause in their contracts forcing the club to play them if they are not injured?!?!? Why else would they get games....that gives me an idea. Not sure how we could do it though.

NP was a hard defender who had some success. He is still that man and I for one am glad we've got a footballing equivalent of the Martin Johnsons of this world in our dressing room.

PS I was home from Plymouth today and I would rather have spent time catching up with old mates than visiting SMS. If you'd told me that a few years ago I'd have thiought you were mad. The whole ground tonight were singing you're not fit to wear our shirt - it's difficult we know booing won't help confidence but we're fed up! I was at the game and listening to the commentary on radio hants and it was said at half time about harsh words being needed... again difficult situation they needed to be shouted at at half time but surely this won't help confidence either?!! What are we to do? Supporting them doesn't help as half of them don't respond to being supported either! As per comments on radio tonight a lot of them seem to be just seeing out their time until retirement. John was crap tonight, didn't look like he could be bothered and I agree with comments about Wright yeah he's rubbish but is never played in position and at least he seems to try. I really don't know what is going to happen to us, I hope we don't go down but can't really see any other outcome to this season.

NP didn't pick the team and he didn't see the Bristol Rovers game (was he not even given a video to watch Sunday afternoon after his appointment or could he not have downloaded it from BBCi Player?!) I'm hoping that after seeing tonight's game he'll see who needs dropping etc and drop them.

My fingers are crossed from now until 4.50 on Saturday that he'll make the changes needed and give us something to smile about!! I'm not expecting him to manage to get the players fit between now and then seeing as it took Roy Keane so long to get Kenwynne fit but if he at least plays them in their correct positions I'll be happy!

PS Does anybody know whether Jermaine Wright did throw the armband down in digust after Plymouth 2nd goal? If he did could this be a sign of frustration instead of total contempt for SFC? I hope it's frustration and not contempt cos as I said before yeah he's crap but at least he seems to try!!

We're in this mess coz that's what they want. They just want to make a mockery out of SFC and theyre succeeding. The Board are a bunch of useless idiots who should relieve themselves of the club NOW! As for the players, I'm not even going to start...
I think it's harsh to blame Crouch, although letting Rasiak and Skacel go out on loan was a joke. This has all trickled down from Rupert Lowe - all the instability began when he was Chairmen, he wouldn't invest in quality players and we have paid a dear price. He brought in George Burley and these are Burleys players that have us staring relegation in the face. I feel we are finally past the Lowe era, but the rot set in long ago and we will pay the price until somebody buys the Club (watch Lowe refuse to sell his shares and screw that up too). I am unsure about Pearson, but am more than willing to give him every opportunity. If we go down, he can't be blamed. This is a sinking ship, and we had to take a chance. Only time will tell. All I know is, Burley has left us in a huge mess with a bunch of soft, wahsed up, unfit fringe players.
PS If Pearson plays Euell again I'll call for his head

You're delusional mate. Your imagination works on overdrive. It just goes to show how insecure you are as a Pompey fan. Gary, I am an avid Saints fan of many years. Your comments seem to be directed to "so called" football supporters like yourself. When Pompey, yes Pompey, not Skates, were in the Championship, one of the things I hoped for was that you would get promoted, and that we would both be playing Premiership football as the pride of the South. I do enjoy sowing seeds though, both in the garden and 'seeds of joy and encouragement' to my poor, dispirited, doomed neighbours, dressed up like red and white zebras!
As you say, Life is Short, especially the Stains life in the Championship!
In the unlikely event that the roles are reversed, then no doubt we at Pompey will have to take it on the chin, the way we did when the Stains were in the Premier League, and we were struggling. Did they rub our noses in the brown and smelly then? You bet your life they did! Did they think there would be a time when they were the county's 'down and outs' with Pompey riding high? No! They thought they could live the dream for ever.

Expect no sympathy from this end of the M27!

When you are living a dream, there comes a time when you have to wake up! The Stains dream come to an end with a 4 - 1 defeat at Fratton Park, and all the historical memories of visits to Wembley are just that - memories, that have no bearing on the future!

Can anybody else spot the irony?

We sack Sturrock because some of our top players don't respect his style.

Four years later and we're stuck with a bunch of players who don't seem to have any respect for the club or the fans and Sturrock is showing he's not sure a bad manager afterall.

Sorry, but we deserve it.

The club has gradually lost it's small family spirit.

People deride the 'small club' mentality, but that's exactly what we need now - a bit of togetherness and spirit, not panic.

Had Adams or Dowie come back, I'm sure they wouldn't recognise us as the same club they left.

Not because of the ground, but because of the lack of soul at every level of the club.

But it's not a time to panic. Evaluating the players and getting the fitness, and most importantly the focus, right will take a good few weeks.

We need a siege mentality and I can't believe the players and fans won't get this soon – it can't get much worse.

All banter aside the only thing that will get you out of this in this present day and age is money and lots of it! Thats what we got at fratton, mainly for the playing staff, and now look at us, I can't see a big investor coming in or showing a real interest.

So as it stands right now if you don't survive and go down, which is still unlikely, you will be a long time gone.

We have been there, the old 4th Div, and it's a long way back, but it was fun on the way.

Just a short ray of light - Thomas IMHO is not a poor player. Quite the opposite. I was at Bramall Lane earlie in the season and about 1000 of us sang "there's only one Wayne Thomas" for half the match. He is a centre back, not a full back, and has had a few injuries, but he is still a good player. Pearson will put him and Davies together and work on them first.

What can WE do about it?

Sure we can't change the manager or the board or pick the team or get the players fit or any of those things

OK...

We are all very aware of the problems facing SFC!

We know who we think is to blame and who is not.

We know what we see week in week out makes us:

a) Angry b) Sad c) Frustrated and probably lots of other things as well BUT......

What can WE do about it?

Sure we can't change the manager or the board or pick the team or get the players fit or any of those things but we CAN SUPPORT CLUB IN IT'S HOUR OF NEED!

I am probably laying myself open to a load of abuse but the one area of SFC that we CAN make positive is our support!

All this moaning and deserting the club is exhibiting behaviour not too different from what we are accusing the players of.

Off to put on my flack jacket!!!.....

I reckon we need about 12 points to reach safety and stay in this league, which equates to one win in in every three games until the end of the season, I would have thought this possible?

The Echo reporter got it spot on Ken, Stains will be six points adrift in a months time ! Ken boy you have a cheek critisising anyone when you come from FAREHAM,you should be ashamed of admitting you come from FAREHAM.

Not sure that 50 points will be enough this year but I hope you're right especially when you look at our run in!

I have a feeling that the games against Scunthorpe and Blackpool will be the most crucial.

Well predictable response 'I know no fans that gave a toss about Pompey'.
For the genuine fan if that was the case fine when we were in Div 4 I can't say I really thought about scum either.
However there was a vocal minority who seemed to find it hysterical that we nearly went bust etc..
So you may understand why you draw heckling from us now.
As for the class is permanent comments you are saying what my mates said for years 'yer but we won the league' lets deal with here and now you are woeful side, we are a top 10 team and I seriously believe you are in real trouble this season.
Watched highlights of your Cup game and the players you have do not look up for a fight.

There were a lot of positive things to see last night, don't let your anger cloud your judgement.

Before Powell went off, we were playing good football and everyone was tackling and hassling Plymouth back into their half. Up to that point, Wright was playing a good role as a holding midfielder in a 4-3-3 formation, putting some good passes through to BWP and moving the ball out wide. Up until then, Plymouth only got the ball into our half when their keeper went long, which Davies mopped up easily and Wright was positioned to move away efficiently. You could sense that, along with the Northam and Itchen chants, the team were gaining confidence and a goal would eventually come.

When Powell was injured, the formation had to change, leaving Wright to go back in defence and giving us Viafara, Euell and Surman to the midfield, all attacking midfielders. It was only then that gaps appeared in the middle park which put pressure on our defence and the two goals came. I did not see Wright throw down the Armband but would imagine it was from frustration, not disrespect. It should have gone to Davies in the first place.

The problem from then on was we had a weak midfield which did not move the ball, or themselves, into good positions, leaving Saga to chase long balls and John to hold up with no support coming.

What I did notice is that Euell played better in the 4-3-3 with Wright alongside. When Viafara came on, Euell reverted to a lazy game relying on others to mop up.

Defensively, Davies and Vignal worked well together and have done for several weeks. But Thomas does not support Wright and cover him when he is up field taking throw ins, etc. For me, this is a weak area which opposition exploit, week in, week out. Count how many times opposition get down our left side when Vignal/Davies play together? Not much, that's for sure.

Last night we also saw that Euell is capable of an enormous throw in which I fail to understand why it is not used all the time. The pressure it put Plymouth under when he took his one and only throw in could have led to a goal, if the rest of the team were expecting it, as it opened up gaps between defenders that Hamill or Saga could exploit. This would ease the pressure on Wright too who gets no options for throw ins and then has to track back quickly, when Thomas should be falling in behind to cover like Davies does for Vignal.

As for booing Wright, that will not help him none and shame on those that did. He may not be our best player, but he has a go and plays simple football. But if his midfielders give him no options and don't make any off the ball runs, what can the guy do. Up until the last few weeks, he has been excellent in the right back position and we have conceeded very little. The moment Thomas went in there, we leaked plenty (QPR).

Like I said, there were plenty of positives last night which is how Pearson will view it this morning. Give them a chance, get behind the team and stay positive.

We need central defenders fit so we don't have to keep playing players out of position when injury dictates, ruining the shape of attacking ability of the team.

Yeah we played awful, yeah the crowd is dwindling, yeah we're in a relegation scrap. But..... There are a couple of positives to take from that match. There was a bit of heart - Bradley and Jhon were getting stuck in, showing a bit of passion. Some players were even chasing after the ball once they'd lost it - that's all we can ask for isn't it?? Alright, they might not have lost it in the first place had we playing well. But all is not lost. Give Pearson a break - do people really expect us to play like Arsenal/Man Utd after he's been in charge for ONE DAY?? The best part of last night was the half-time Dominos Pizza to warm my cockles!!! (So who needs a kitchen, eh Mike???)
So Kate, that was you dancing with your Dad on the big screen?

we may be in a bad patch & we may get relegated but even if we dropped out of the football league altogether i would still support saints. I would rather be stone cold dead & six feet under than a pompey supporter .

MAY be in a bad patch? There is no question about it, YOU ARE in a bad patch - no doubt about it!
Yes! You may get relegated! Not a certainty, but the prospects are not good!
Dropping out of the football league? Possibly, in time, or if you go bankrupt and have as much luck in attracting a buyer as you have had up until now!
Your final option! In a way I can identify with your feelings! The vast majority of Pompey Fans would not be seen dead wearing a tatty
RED AND WHITE STRIPED SHIRT!

Anyway, as it took a season for you to learn both the words and the tune of 'Harry and Jim', I guess that you would be dead anyway by the time you learned the words and tune of

I note that in the 'TOP JOBS' advertised at the top of this page,
'ADMINISTRATION ASSISTANTS, Southampton'
are required!

Is SFC preparing for Financial Meltdown?

I and probably 90% of the people on here care not about them but would love us, them and Bournemouth all to do well. I really start to think twice though when I have to read some of the stuff that is posted. If you come on here you are merely sewing the seeds for the next generation of hate filled fans. You may not like to hear this but the roles will reverse again one day. Will we hear from you then? Would you want to hear from us? No, didn't think so. Life is short so go and spend your time doing something more constructive.
Hey Ed! I come on here but, as my eyesight is not that good, I am no good at 'sewing' seeds - I have problems threading the needle!
Oh come on Sailor Sam old chap,(unless your name is Samantha of course, in which case, old girl). I have been a Saints fan since I was a young lad, and will be forever, whichever league they are in. It's my home town club you see.
You obviously have a degree of intelligence way above that of many of the Pompey cretins who grace these posts on a regular basis, but I can't help feeling that you do have that underlying need to gloat over a neighbouring team's misfortunes.
When we were in the Premiership and you lot were not, it was my wish that we would both be up there together, and also, (big dream this) that all the south coast clubs would be up there too. Why would I want that? Because I am a football fan first and foremost, and I feel sure that true football fans would want the same in other parts of the country. Do you think that true Liverpool fans would want to see Everton collapse, or vice versa? I don't think so, and I feel sure the same would apply to the fans of the London, Sheffield and Nottingham clubs too.
The people who supposedly rubbed your noses in the doggy doos a few years ago were, in my opinion, not worth a w#nk, and the same applies to anyone on your side of the fence who does the same.
Football is a beautiful game, but unfortunately there are those of us who don't know what it's all about, present company excepted of course.
I look forward to some constructive critisism for you Sam, assuming you still plan to post on our local paper's site of course.

Agree with you wholeheartedly Chris!
Despite trying to lead a good life, I have found that following the teachings that asks me to 'turn the other cheek' means I end up with a black eye and bruises.
For that reason, I react!
During the Pompey doldrums, and Saints were, not exactly flying high, but in the old first division and then Premier League, believe me, I had my nose rubbed in it, and had to take it.
Can you honestly blame me if, when I see a load of abuse printed on here, I react, and give as good as I get?
Who knows! This point of contact could, one day, be a constructive meeting point!
I believe that, as football fans, we have a damned sight more in common than what divides us - a personal view not held by everyone!!!!
With regard posting on YOUR local paper's site, it may surprise you to know that I was born in the Southampton area and like to keep abreast of people and events!
I was lucky! I not only survived, but moved to a PREMIER location!
