Lundekvam fighting to save career

Claus Lundekvam's playing career has been thrown into jeopardy after he suffered a devastating injury set-back.

The Saints skipper, who has not played at all this campaign, is definitely out for the rest of the season and is now facing yet more surgery after a recurrence of his long-standing ankle problem.

Lundekvam had seemed to be making a strong recovery from summer surgery and the club hoped he might be able to start playing again by the end of March.

However, he pulled up in training after the ankle gave way yet again and is now waiting to learn the full extent of the damage.

But the 35-year-old, who has made more than 400 appearances for the club, said he no longer wants to push the ankle too hard.

"I was doing a routine running test," he said. "I had done three the previous week without a problem and this one was going OK.

"Then without warning the ankle just collapsed. I was hoping it might just be a release of scar tissue but deep down I knew something was badly wrong.

"It turned out that the tendon has more or less torn off again, which is devastating for me and all the medical staff who have been working so hard to get me fit.

"It is incredible bad luck which has pretty much set me back to square one and it looks as though I will need further surgery.

"We have sought different opinions to see what options we have but they all seem to be saying that is the case.

"There is no chance of playing again this season and I now have to decide where to go from here. The ankle has been through a lot over the years and there has been a lot of wear and tear which is stopping it healing properly and I don't want to push it too far."

Lundekvam, who joined Saints from Brann Bergen for £350,000 in 1996, hurt the ankle in the final league game of last season at home to Southend and enjoyed a strong pre-season before suffering a set-back on the tour of Norway.

Thats a bit strong. He was one of our greatest players during the premiership era. He's actually played for us a lot longer than some other so called 'legends' being mentioned, and made more of a contribution

Having said that I think its time for him to call it a day, and save a bit on his wage bill

This is really sad news. Whatever anyone thinks or says about the relegation season and his captaincy, Claus has been a great player for Saints. His defensive partnerships with people like Dean Richards and Michael Svensson were awesome and gave us a really solid defensive record for the first time in a long time. I really hope he can come back, but reading into what he's said I'd say it is very unlikely. Claus, you are a true Saints legend and I wish you all the best!

I would not class him as this at all! He has been a model professional his entire career and has been a great servant to the club, don't you remember what a class act Claus and Svensson were together?? Unfortunately now at his age, the injuries will take longer to heal and it may be best for him to call it a day.

I find it really offensive that anyone can be pleased to hear about Claus's anguish on the basis of saving his wages. It demonstrates the worst of the mindless infantile garbage that infects so much of so-called "fans" comments. Claus has been a magnificent, loyal servant of our club ove a very long period and one of the key reasons why we sustained our improbable position in the Premiership for so long. The last time Saints were struck by a similar catastrophe to a great centre-back, Michael Svensson, who we - literally - could not afford to replace it led pretty directly to relegation; very little to do with Lowe or the boardroom or anything else. We just have to keep the faith that history isn't about to repeat itself. Best wishes and thanks to Claus, whatever happens, and I wish Nigel Pearson and the team all possible good fortune.

It's good to see the physio department is working it's magic once again.....

LE TISSIER
SVENNSON
PAHARS
DELGADO
BAILKOWSKI (he always seems to be injured now!)
BERESFORD
VENISON

to name but a few in recent times.....

All were pretty much injury free until the saints physio department go their scalpels into them and suddenly none of them play for the club again......

Just what the hell do they do apart from try and get work fromt he Saints website?

It's time they stopped trying to get extra business and concentrated on the job they are paid to do

I wouldn't exactly call him a model professional...yeah, a great servant to the club BUT seeing him 'out his face' most weekends whilst smoking a fag down 'Lagerworld' wasn't exactly being 'professional' was it ?

I’m not sure why the website is even talking about this – he should have retired last season as it was, if not before!! He’s done well over the years but he’s had his day and certainly wasn’t captain material. He's 35 is he not?! Very old for a footballer. Everyone says it, and I’m inclined to agree, Davies is a natural leader. We need more leaders in our squad!

Thanks Claus but time for new blood.

What's so annoying is, they knew about Claus and Svensson for ages yet did nothing - we'd probably not be in this state if we draughted in suitable replacements. They can't claim it was a surprise! Good foresight Saints, as usual! IDIOTS!!

Considering we have a leaky defence, I was surprised we did not keep Stephen O'Halloran for a bit longer.
Leeds United have now signed the defender on a month's loan. Any ideas why we did not try and keep him at least for another month - I didnt think he was that bad.

I understand that there were two reasons why O'Halloran did not stay.
a) He did not know at which end to score and
b) As a professional, he had to be paid!
