Lallana and team prove critics wrong

Adam Lallana believes Saints' scintillating performance against Derby has "proven a few critics wrong".

The midfielder grabbed the only goal of the game as Saints picked up their first win of the season at Pride Park with a terrific footballing display.

After two defeats in their opening two league matches questions were being asked by sections of the fans as to whether Jan Poortvliet's belief in a young team and total football ethos was the right way ahead.

Lallana thinks the players have shown it is.

He said: "We've proved a few critics wrong.

"They've said that we're a young team and we couldn't hack it in the Championship, but we've proved them wrong.

"We're a bunch of kids who just want to play football. We enjoy it and we just want to get on with it.

"At Derby we did that and we're thoroughly proud of ourselves.

"Our philosophy is to get on the ball and play and just let it go.

The critics certainly have been proved wrong, but that won't stop them continuing to post their dismal prophesies of doom here. Or their suggestions on how to stop the rot they perceive at the heart of this wonderful Club.
Great result lads. Well worked for at every level. We've started to turn heads, maybe, just maybe, we have the ability to turn the world upside down.

I still can't stop smiling about the win and it feels great to be a Saints fan again.

The world is a better place today - although God is still taking the p*ss out of me. Now my German team is bottom of the Bundesliga. I'm the only one with a massive smile on my face.

A lot of the players may lack experience but the likes of Schneiderlin, Holmes and Lallana certainly have the ability to compete at this level. The more they play together the better they will get. Certainly a more positive philosophy than playing a load of journeymen as we've done since relegation.

Not in January unless someone really shines but come the end of the season you may be proved right: the club is skint - it doesn't take a genius to work that out. Similarly, it shouldn't take a genius to grasp economic fundamentals

As long as they hold on to the majority of the talent, bring in one or two and blood another one or two, then they should survive and grow by developing an economically sustainable future, something sadly lacking over the last few seasons.

Why are some unable to see the financial reality?

Well done on Saturday, Saints, and good luck tomorrow night and for the rest of the season. It is wonderful to have a manager who talks sense and has faith in talent.

What the club is trying to do is very brave but please let's remember that this is boldness borne necessity.

I wish the board, the management and the players the very best of luck. I hope they all continue to believe in themselves.

A play-off spot would be amazing, a mid-table finish would be great but, surely, with no money and a team of talent and potential, not being relegated would represent success.

Has it been clarified who got the goal? It's been reported here for the last couple of days that it was McGoldrick, and now we're told it was Lallana. The official site has claimed all along it was Lallana, but all other sources say McGoldrick. Having seen replays on TV, I'm undecided. Is it official yet?

Chris,

A very interesting point I have raised in the past.

Where should we be aiming - APART FROM 100% Financial security.

Should we be aiming for promotion - indeed is that the ONLY thing that matters.

Should we settle for the Championship over the next 2/3 years?

Is the Championship 2nd rate mediocrity?

Is the Premiership financial suicide UNLESS you go in with a rich backer?

Not sure that there is only 1 answer.

What do you think?

It really winds me up that people harp on about financial realities, a line delivered so well by Lowe, and accepted so readily by those that like to feel that they understand things so much better than others.

Please tell me how it is financially prudent to continually disenchant fans that part from their own money and ask for nothing in return but passion and a willingness to play for the club.

While you are there, please tell me of the wondrous financial prudence there is in producing a team that will have a good chance of being relegated to league one every season. The selling those that keep us up.

Chris states

“they should survive and grow by developing an economically sustainable future”

Chris this is exactly the reasoning that got us relegated after 25 years in the premiership.

I love the passion that is being shown by the manager and the players at the moment. I think that we will struggle but hopefully stay up. But where will the team spirit be if half the team is sold?

Lallana's goal, bounced down well behind the line before Mcgoldrick header, in any event the linesman was already signalling a goal.

Jesus,

I agree with your sentiment. It is, however, exactly that: sentiment.

It may wind you up, but we do not have money. If we did there would be no point in Lowe cost cutting, it makes no business sense whatsoever.

I don't believe it is financially prudent to disenchant fans, but if some fans believe that all is well financially and that no players should ever be sold - either for cash or because the player has a better offer from a bigger club in a higher league - then those fans will forever be disenchanted as there is little realism in their reasoning. I think that's the point you're trying to make, so forgive me, Jesus, if I am wrong.

The prudence in selling players is:
- it clears debt and enables profit to be made.
- you can't keep a player who has a better offer if they want to go. Most people if offered a better job with better pay and conditions will move. Footballers are, and shouldn't be, any different.

Though, again, I agree with your sentiment: it would be great if they stayed and we didn't need to sell them and we won promotion.

I believe that it was not this reasoning that got us relegated, but the wrong manager, the wrong players, injuries (Svensson especially) and poor performances.

Moreover, I believe that it was this reasoning that enabled Saints to stay in the top flight for so long.

Finally, when I do post on here I make no reference to Lowe but feel I must now as you seem to believe that I take whatever he says for granted.

Lowe has and did do some good things. He also did some awful things and has made, in the past, terrible managerial appointments.

However, under his leadership Saints were financially stable, albeit at the cost of selling certain players, e.g Bridge. I didn't, like you I imagine, want to see Bridge go. There is nothing that anybody could have done to have prevented that. The job of the chairman is to make sure he gets the best deal and the right replacement, which in Le Saux he didn't, though at the time I thought it represented good business.

What should really wind you up is that we were so mismanaged by Wilde then Crouch - though I believe they tried and wanted to do better - that we had to go to Arsenal and settle up on the Walcott deal, accepting less that was initially agreed.

Until, if ever, we have the financial backing that puts us, year after year, in the top four then we will forever be a selling club. Having said that, Arsenal still have their hand forced by teams like Barca and look at the pressure Ronaldo put on United to join Real: there is always someone bigger.

The aim must be to be in a position where we can buy more than we need to sell. By hopefully generating enough talent in the academy to keep the majority, replace from within and buy a few quality players with the cash, if there is enough left after clearing debts, then eventually Saints could be in this position - again.

Of course players will need to be sold. That is part and parcel of modern football. However we seem to be falling over our selves to sell players.

Yes, Wilde does wind me up, he is supposed to be a director and he seems to be doing less than a car park attendant at the moment.

Why does Lowe want him at the club after he called for Lowe’s head? Perhaps its the six figure salary that shows the most financial prudence.

It seems that we will be giving Rudi away to championship rivals for nothing, we are basically doing the same with Rasiak and we sold Andrew Davies for a mere 200k profit. None of this makes sound business sense.

This is cost cutting gone mad. If we had expressed any desire to keep Andrew Davies and he played more than 9n games for saints do you not think that we would have got more than 1.2m for him.

We may as well have put the majority of the first team on ebay with no reserve, and a statement saying, "please take these players away, if you don’t want to pay for them just wait until closer to the transfer window when we will pay you to take them"

This is not sentiment talking. This is realism. Those that are not blinded by a false dawn can see history repeating itself.

Lowe may be a better making the same mistakes that we have already

There is no point in attempting to oust Lowe. He will always cling like a barnacle to the Titanic. We can only hope that he will see that there is more profit in growing the club than being a glorified agent.

Realist, 0m asl says...

Players sold/leaving - not very good for the club, expensive, heart not in club, price too good.
Players at club - good to superb, yet to prove consistency, financially affordable, hearts and minds with the club, their wages will rise with the club's success.

Conclusion - COYR!
