LIPHOOK'S Sam Hutsby missed out on victory in the Portuguese Amateur Championship today, but still claimed a top ten finish.
The 20-year-old started the final round on six-under, just one shot off the lead, after a fantastic 66 on day two in the first major European event of the season at the Troia Golf Resort.
However, a four-over-par 76 in his final round meant he finished in sixth position.
Hutsby, who is ranked as Britain's number one amateur, was hurt by a triple bogey at the ninth and a double at the 12th.
It was a disappointing end to the week for Hutsby, but still an encouraging performance, as he looks to secure a place in the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team to take on the United States of America in Pennsylvania in September.
Hutsby is next week due to compete in the Spanish Amateur Championship, which he won in 2006.
