Wotte's Egypt U-turn

MARK WOTTE has admitted he booked his flights to Egypt expecting to quit Saints and take a job there – but changed his mind after Pinnacle dropped out of the race to buy the club.

Wotte’s loyalty and integrity over a very difficult summer was rewarded this week when his academy director contract was officially changed to give him the job title of manager.

But it only came weeks of uncertainty and increasing frustration as potential new owners identified managers to take over from him – as he still trained the first team.

Matt Le Tissier’s snapped meeting with Kevin Keegan was bad for Wotte’s morale, mention of Peter Reid in connection with the Marc Jackson group was awful but the tipping point came when Michael Fialka, Pinnacle’s ‘money man’, appeared on TV and discussed appointing a new manager.

At that point Wotte decided to quit Saints for his own pride and accept a lucrative job offer in Egypt.

But, once the Pinnacle deal collapsed, he changed his mind and is now looking forward to the start of next season.

He said: “To be honest I booked my flight to Egypt for July 1 but when the Pinnacle group pulled out it changed everything.

“I was ready to leave – not because I didn’t like Southampton, I really wanted to stay, but for my pride I didn’t want to continue preparing the team for somebody else.

I'm confused. Does this all mean that he is the gaffer until a new buyer comes round and sacks him or does it mean that he has to stay on even if the buyer wants someone else???

maybe he already has had talks with th new buyer.
he can't say anything yet.
the guy deserves a chance, with cash in his pocket to buy and a stress free start, then we can judge him fairly.
in fairness he was in an impossible situation last season he couldn't even sign loan players

Think Mark Wotte is a
man of honour and has
a bit about him, he
has behaved with great dignity through
this difficult time
for our club.
Feel that he should be rewarded with a
position at our club,
maybe coaching our
young players etc,
just don't feel he's
the right man to be
first team manager/
coach whatever they
call them these days.
Don't think he should
just be booted out,
but feel we need an
inspirational man with experience and
understanding of
League 1.

Ross96 - It means that he has a contract to manage the team for the season. If the new management decide to hire a new gaffer to replace him, then they would have to pay him for the remaining term of his contract I believe. It is financial assurance for him to have the contract for the year. All the consortiums however acted very unprofessional by discussing new managers in public before even owning the team.

I totally agree with you on this milton road, in todays football there is not much integrity, but Mark Wotte has poved beyond doubt he is committed and with decent players to pick from, he could be just the man for the job, I have said on here before he does say the right things, give him a chance I say

If my memory serves me correctly didn't he say a while back that he'd already 'spoken to the Swiss group'? This was before Pinnacle gained exclusivity. Maybe they told him he'd be manager under their stewardship and he's hoping they'll now complete? Who knows!

I endorse the theme of the above posts.
Mark Wotte is a decent man with integrity, which might be rare in football.
In reality he is in a "no lose" situation, as he has the secuity of a 12 month rolling contract, and is obviously highly regarded in Egypt.
I finally believe that he has passion and fire in his belly for Saints.
Let's give a fair crack of the whip and enjoy the renaissance of Saints FC.
Oh what irony, security words -"deal-year" !!!

MW is clearly a man of integrity and honour.
The way he has acted over the past few months proves this.
Look at some of the other people that have been in the club lately... Rednapp... possibly the most negative man ever to walk through the gates... All he did for the time he was in charge was go on about how difficult a position we were in and how hard it's going to be... hardly what you wanted when you're in a relegation fight.
Hoddle... ran away at the first sniff of a better job.
Even Strachen, (and don't get me wrong... i love the guy) but ran off as soon as things started to look more difficult and had a few dissagreements with the board. And i'm not even gonna start on the rest of the bunch of failed experiments we've had in and out of the revolving doors of SMS over the past few years.
You don't get much more difficult than what we've had over the past few months, and he's still here.
He clearly loves the club as much as some of us and i think that if you've got the passion you're already half way there.
Ok... he may not be the best manager in the world, but that can come with time, experience and getting to work day in day out with the team... and to be honest, how much of last year was his fault and how much was the half the team not giving a cr@p
If he loves this club he will work twice as hard to make it successful. If we start to succeed and climb the table you know he's not going to walk away when a championship or Prem team come sniffing.
If things get difficult he's going to do everything he can to sort it out.
He's the only person at the club that has consistently given us news about what's going on... (even if that is just "we've done fitness tests"), he's the only person that has remained possitive about a take over (despite rumours about loosing his job), and the only person that has publicly said they would like to stay at saints (and thats despite being offered another job probably on better pay and with better conditions).
I think as fans we owe him something... and i think we should get behind him and give him a chance. L1 is a great place for him to perfect his role.
A few months ago everyone on here was whinging about 10 managers in 10 years or what ever it is now... i loose count due to lack of fingers... We finally get the chance to have a bit of stability and everyone wants another change????
If he fails by January then start asking questions... But until then I'm behind him 100%, and honestly can't think of any other person I would rather have in control at our club.

Mark Fry and the old board took steps to shore up the club earlier in the week to get the wages paid and buy time for Mark Fry to get a deal done. He already praised the board for their part in things.

AS Mark Wotte has already said he can't yet offer contracts I'd say The old board gave him his contract with the consent of the lead bidders with operational clauses.

Having the chance at being the 5th richest club in England is fantastic. Keith Harris completes deals he works on. The Leibherr Family have a great reputation. If they buy Saints we'll have a long secure future with every chance of significant investment in new talent to take us to the prem fast track.

These are exciting times.

Please show your support for mark Wotte and get out to Saints v Totton 7.45pm Tues.

He's a real Saint and deserves the fans behind him.

Mark may soon be dealing with some big stars? Now that prospect is brilliant.

I'm delighted to read so many positive notes about Wotte. The man has got pedigree both with coaching and management, please check.

He also, and I keep repeating this in post after post, has got the best points per game ratio of our last three managers. That includes Pearson! And he was in a worse position than any of the others, finally having the whole club scuppered by administration and a team full of boys. The man requires massive amounts of credits both for what he did then and for what he has done over the summer.

A bad manager doesn't get any better because you keep him on for years, but here is one with a proven record, both here and in Holland. He deserves our full support, not only until January, but for the next couple of years at least.

While I was not convinced by Wotte last season and prefer someone with knowledge of the lower leagues for new players he has earnt the right to be our manager next season for the loyalty he has shown which has almost certainly stopped a mass exodus of players at cut down prices. He will have my full support and we need to now give hime the chance to prove he can get us back up.

On the Swiss connection does look good news but if the backers are who is reported what the hell was Fry doing giving a group like Pinnacle exclusivity especially as the Swiss came in at the the same time. How many weeks extra delay has been brought on because Fry ignored what was clearly a viable bid? Have to say the Swiss bid seems to be professional, no leaks to press, visits to players, comments on new manager etc so hope Fry doesnt waste anymore time and gets sorted tomorrow. As a Saints fan for 40 years I live in hope never knowing why!!

Well done Mark, I for one would like to see the club get behind a manager and show support so he stays for a long while. The club has a history of turning over managers, which is part of the reason we are where we are.

As much as I admire Matt Le Tiss skill and long term commitment when playing he is probably not best placed in the negotiation world when it comes to football. Both the failed (I don't think they had the money)take over bid and then the disrespectful claims that a new manager would be appointed were very clear signs of his naivete. Ex players do not in general make for committee men, I can only think of one and that is Sir Bobby Charlton and Matt never got near his status. So stick to your SKY Matt and let the club get on with being valid again

I'm pleased to see that the general consensus on here is that Wotte should be given a shot if and when a take-over happens.
I was a big fan of the guy, last season, when there were plenty on here willing to shoot him down. He did a good job, considering the circumstances and don't forget that in the first half of last season, his reserve's side were un-beaten. Not much of a battle, most would think, but it shows that at the very least, his teams were well prepared and tactically sound. Especially considering the fact that most reserve sides were made up of non-first teamers and under-18's.

Wotte is a clueless manager.

The "must win" Charlton game comes to mind where the 2 central midfield players were playing as an extra forward and an extra defender.

On 64 & 73 mins he changed the 2 wide midfields (Adam & Drew) and brought on players who played closer to the touchline (Smith & BWP).
A TOTALLY CLUELESS decision.

What he should have been doing was getting the 4 in midfield to play closer together, with the fullbacks giving the width.

The next home game (Palace) he got the midfield players to play closer together but IMO it was a WEEK TOO LATE. It was as if somebody who knows about Football had a chat with him during the week.

A good manager should be able to see what is going right and wrong for his team on the pitch in that 90 mins and adjust the tactics accordingly.

The two Davids (A & M) on the Radio Stations are a hundred times better at reading games than the clueless Wotte. The numbers of times they were going on about the total lack of preparation for the team e.g. who was picking who up at corners and freekicks etc. It was non-existent in the second half of the season.

Remember he was here for the whole season working with the players and his tactics in the second half of the season was to just hoof the ball up front

IMO if he is here at the start the season I give him 6 games before the fans start calling for his head and the sacking will follow by Sept or Oct.

The really inspiring news today is what I read in the Mail on Sunday this morning, to know that the Liebherr family are behind the bid is fantastic news, they have already supported our City & docks in other ventures, so they obviously hold us close to their hearts, thank you God!!!

If the family complete the takeover tomorrow I for one will probably cry, and I dont mind admitting it, the relief will be too much, Lowe will be a long forgotten nightmare, the road back will take a while, but its coming!

Just a quick last paragraph, John Wade et al have been strangely quiet recently, especially since they now know their alleged sugar daddy was nothing but a face for Shinawatra, dont you just love what comes around, they are more and more in the cack, and sinking fast, maybe you should have held your collective fire before coming on here lording it up, muppets.

We have had so many fractious events over the last 5/6 years it would be really soul soothing to know that Saints are safe, MW deserves our full support, he's not Ferguson, but who is??!! I am 100pc behind him. These have been the most sensible and most optomistic postings I have read in a long time. The Saints we grew up with and love would not have dumped on Wotte. We know who would have done nut he has gone. It is all starting to feel as though a new era is dawning. An era in our history reflecting our commonly held values of decency and respect and honourable behaviour. Our friends down the raod could learn a thing or two about that. If I was a Skate I would be more worried than any Saints fan has been for the last few months. They are shipping players fast and bringing in dross and still not making money. Does that sound familiar? But in the end all they had was the palyers for they have no other assets.

Once more I am starting to feel really proud about being a Saint. All we need now is to ignore the Skate WUMs and the negativity amongst a handful of our own fans.

We are on the up.

Morning coffee with the thread this morning in NZ. Great to read how much more positive most are becoming.

I fully support Mark Wotte and have the confidence that he'll chop non-performers and use any decent budget given to him wisely.

It's great getting up to a Monday morning 13 hours ahead of you folk.. I'll get off to work looking forward to an evening of checking in for news of the big announcement.

I remember as a kid from Graham Rd having to avoid certain yobbo fans up London Road on the way to The Dell. Now Saints are closer to home haha hopefully in this day and age All Fans can get behind the new regime give praise when due and have enjoyable sensible debate about football matters without acting like the yobbos of the past in verbally slashing out.

Mark Wotte is a True Saint for staying put. He has a great vision for motivation and exudes work ethic. That is infectious.

The coffee tastes better today.
You guys and gals sleep well tonight. While you're at work tomorrow I'll be glued to the pc with another coffee and maybe a brandy & lovage for a little celebration a bit later.

"An era in our history reflecting our commonly held values of decency and respect and honourable behaviour."

This is what we've lost over the past few years and was epitomised by staff, managers and profesionals like Dodd and Le Tissier back through all the generations of our club - We need to have this attitude from the top down all the way through the club.

Wotte has shown his resolve and determination to do the job in an honourable and professional manner - he deserves at least another season, I'm pleased he's getting it!

Whilst I have never been the greatest Wotte fan I have to say that the manner in which he has conducted himself over the last couple of months has been truly saintly. He has displayed the honesty, loyalty and dignity that I hope returns to our family club. He deserves our support and I am 100% behind him. Mark Wotte is very committed. Pinnacle jumped the gun and led everyone on a merry dance of misinformation which caused a lot of trouble and dissent.

Mark Wotte now has a rolling 12 month contract which was agreed by the board and the administrator, I guess with clauses and agreement from the bidding parties.

Everything is looking great for a very lucrative, stable future at Southampton Football Club.

We have a short wait to go after a long bumpy trip.

After the era of decline it's finally time to band together, put the past in the past and get on with being the best supporters of the club we can possibly be.

If The Liebherr family are behind the Keith Harris deal then it would be a dream come true for fans and we must get in behind and support the new regime.

Feet on the ground, patient and quietly excited here in NZ. It'll be great news to hear that you are all off to support the team at Totton Tuesday Night....

"The club is moving forward again but there is still so much to sort out."

Fry has had to sell Nathan Dyer, Andrew Surman and David McGoldrick to pay wages and other bills. Wotte thinks he can persuade keeper and West Ham target Kelvin Davis and strikers Jason Euell and Bradley Wright-Phillips to stay"

They are are saying Southampton's prospective owners are prepared to bring in Alan Shearer.

That sounds more like one of the wannabe's not The Swiss Group as they to their great credit leaked nothing through the whole process.

Perhaps another Jackson red herring?
