BOTH managers were pleased with their team’s work out in a very competitive friendly game played at Barlows Park on Saturday, which saw home side Tadley Calleva beat visiting Hartley Wintney 3-1.
Substitute Ian Cadman scored a brace to add to Ben Nicholls opener, while Gavin Delf netted for the visitors to make it 2-1 at the time.
Victorious manager Craig Effer said: “I think in the first half they were the better side, but did not really penetrate us. We had a talk in the break and then we really got at them and expressed ourselves. In the end I think our fitness told and of course it helped I could rotate the players.”
His opposite number Pete Gray said: “We did all right early on and if we had scored then I think it would have been a different story. It has been a good work-out and we still have plenty of time to work on things before the season starts.”
In the game on Saturday, Tadley goalkeeper Chris Waller had to be alert to stop Hartley taking the lead after seven minutes, as he tipped over a wind assisted free-kick from the half-way line from James Reeves.
The visitors continued to carve out the chances with Piotr Zygier and Matt Brunt forcing saves out of Waller and the impressive Danny Bevins heading over at a corner.
The home side then produced the best move of the first-half, as the dangerous Andy Johnson broke a challenge and fed Matt Aslett on the right channel.
He returned the ball for Johnson, who sent in a cross which Nicholls met beautifully and only a super save from Nathan Sayers denied him.
Hartley replied with Bevins showing some smart touches, before his low shot was deflected wide and then right on half-time Waller did well to deny Dave Richards, after he was put through by a great ball from Zygier.
On the hour, Zygier went close as he shot hit the post and was gathered up by Waller and then on 62 minutes, Tadley took the lead, as Pete White played the ball on for Ben Nicholls to score.
Hartley hit back as Bevins had a shot palmed away, but they then found themselves 2-0 down.
Substitute Cadman ran down the right wing, played the ball inside to midfield work horse Simon Care. He lobbed the ball on for Cadman to score.
This time the visitors did come back with a goal, as good work from Brunt saw his centre put away by Delf from close range.
However, the home side were not finished and on 77 minutes, another White feed saw Cadman grab his second of the game.
This was the second match between these sides on Saturday.
In the earlier game Hartley were victorious 2-0, as Delf scored the opener and then Aaron Jessavanala wrapped up the win, as he followed up a Danny Roberts free-kick.
Tadley opened their friendly campaign last Wednesday night with an emphatic 5-1 victory over a visiting Andover XI.
Sutael Odeh, Carl Saunders, Barry Smith, Ashley Ledger and Nick Willcock all found the back of the net.
Tadley are next in action on Saturday, away to Reading Senior League side Frillsham and Yattendon.
On same day, Hartley continue their pre-season, as they entertain Basingstoke Town Reserves.
