Saints lost their final friendly of the summer 3-0 to QPR at Loftus Road.
Alan Pardew’s side go into the League One opener against Millwall next Saturday on the back of just one pre-season win and with much work still to do.
QPR took the lead midway through the first half when Saints allowed Kasper Gorkss to meet Wayne Routledge’s inswinging corner.
It was 2-0 before half time when Angelo Balanta finished low past Kelvin Davis.
QPR added a third 20 minutes from time when Adel Taarabt produced a mazy run and a clinical side footed finish.
Saints struggled to create chances of their own, the nearest they came being a first half header from Joseph Mills that went back across goal but wide.
