Dean Hammond is eyeing a first career appearance in the FA Cup fourth round after Saints’ 3-2 win over Northampton.

The skipper was in thick of the action, scoring at both ends and conceding a penalty in a commanding display at Sixfields.

Hammond has only made it to the third round stage twice before during his time with Brighton.

He was part of the Seagulls side that lost 1-0 at home to Coventry in 2005/06 and 3-0 at West Ham the following season.

The midfielder knows that one more win will take him into uncharted territory.

And with Saints also just a couple of rounds from a potential Wembley final in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, it is exciting times with regards to cup football.

He said: “It is just another game but it’s one we’re playing so we want to win.

“They’re all very important, league and cup, we want to win in them so we take them very seriously.

“It’d be nice to get a trip to Wembley from one of them but we’re taking it one step at a time.

“We won’t get ahead of ourselves and we’ll keep trying to win.

“I’ve played in the third round before with Brighton but never got close to the fourth round.”
