LAST-GASP LEVELLER: George Preston, left
THERE was a thrilling end to the annual Portland United charity challenge on Boxing Day.
George Preston scored a last-gasp leveller for his father’s team, Nick Preston’s All Stars, in the island clash at Grove Corner that finished 3-3.
Darren Whyton’s All-comers had taken a 2-0 half-time lead through Adam Skelton and James Turrell before Carl Richardson reduced the arrears after the break.
Skelton then extended Whyton’s lead to 3-1 before Jimmy McKay made it 3-2 in the game that raised money for Dorset County Hospital’s special care baby unit.
Preston then completed the scoring with a last-minute effort to level proceedings.
After the game, Nick Preston said: “There was another good turnout on Boxing Day for the game.
“It was touch and go whether the game would go ahead after the recent wet weather but the Grove pitch stood up to the test.
“We had about 30 players turn up with Andy Turrell, Royston Mitchell, Kern Fogden and Richard Harper among the names, while Pete Turrell refereed the game.
“It was a good family affair and we all had a good catch-up in the bar afterwards.”
