WEYMOUTH Ladies secured another three South West League Premier Division points with a fine home win over Cleeve West Town.
Cleeve West travelled to the Bob Lucas Stadium full of hope that they could do the double over Weymouth, having won the previous meeting 2-1 earlier in the season.
However, the hosts were confident that they could overturn that defeat as they had a much stronger squad on duty on this occasion.
In fact, Tim Davis’ side got off to the perfect start by taking the lead inside the first five minutes when Bryony Webb finished clinically from close range.
The home side’s new-look 4-2-3-1 formation with Zoe Acutt and Samantha John-son being employed as the holding midfielders was working well and this enabled skipper Rosie Sharpe to push further forward to support lone front runner Shannon Peaty.
As a result, Cleeve were finding it hard to get a grip on the game and it was not long before Weymouth’s slick passing and good movement began creating further chances.
Sharpe, Webb, Acutt and Jess Turk all had opportunities to extend the lead but a combination of good goalkeeping and resolute defending kept the score at 1-0 at half-time.
With the strong wind more to their backs in the second period, Weymouth continued to dominate and eventually got that all-important second goal with 25 minutes left when Sharpe finished off a good passing move with a neat finish.
The third and final goal then came on 80 minutes when a succession of interchanges released Turk who raced clear of the despairing defenders before sliding the ball past the advancing keeper.
A delighted Davis said: “All-in-all, this was a very satisfying and comprehensive victory which sees us remain in a credible third place in the table.”
Sunday sees a massive match when Weymouth will entertain the powerful Parley Sports in the semi- final of the Dorset County Cup with a 2pm kick-off.
