Title success for Southampton University

SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY

Just champion!

That’s Southampton University, who clinched the SnowsGroup Hampshire League Division 1 championship with an exciting 3-3 draw at Romsey, who can still finish second.

The students who only needed a draw to secure the title, stormed into a 2-0 lead through Ed Hammill and Ben Blacker, and looked capable of running Romsey off their feet, despite the sandy surface which is hardly conducive to good hockey.

Ben Mullan got Romsey back into the contest at 2-1 but almost immediately Blacker pounced with the University’s third goal.

When Neil Strong trimmed the scores again, the students had to dig deep, but Blacker ought to have sealed the game with a rasping shot which cannoned of the underside of the crossbar and back into play.

It gave Romsey the incentive they needed and Mullan’s late equaliser gave the hosts a deserved share of the spoils.

Romsey can snatch the runners-up spot if they win their remaining four matches. The second-placed team goes into a play off with the Surrey League runners-up.

Romsey’s prospects were boosted when Wimborne Wayfarers crashed to a surprise 3-2 home defeat by lowly Fareham III.
